    Madea Goes To Jail

Tyler Perry is obviously a talent and gets a lot of bang for his buck, but his most successful movie grossed a modest $63+ million, so why is Madea Goes To Jail being double screened at most theaters in this area (Metro New Orleans)?

    Simple equation:

Tyler Perry Madea Movie + City w/ a lot of Black People + Opening Weekend = A lot of sold out theaters.

I live about 30 min outside of DC and 20 outside of Baltimore. Where I live (which is majority white) the movie is playing in one theater. In the theater in my old neighborhood (majority black) its playing in 3.

That's where my thinking was, except this is also occurring in the mostly white suburbs of Kenner and the heavily white suburbs of Metarie.

Well white people make up a significant chunk of that 60 million dollars. I would say 60 to 70 percent of these moviegoers are going to be black but alot will be non black. Also, I know a ton of black people who live in black neighborhoods but go to movies in white neighborhoods to get away from the foolishness in some black theaters (babies crying, cell phones, talking etc.)

I hate Tyler Perry and his movies so much. That's offtopic but I didn't think I'd see a topic about this movie on here.

I mostly just hate his commercials. Just when I though that the "House of Payne" commercials were chipping away at my last nerve, here comes another family sitcom with exaggerated characters called "Meet the Browns"... good god man, get a new concept.

I totally get that Tyler Perry's movies/shows aren't aimed at me at all...

What ends up annoying me (and most comedians you hear) is all the "Tyler Perry" adding on to names. It just gets obnoxious hearing "Tyler Perry" all the time, especially on TBS commercials.

It's smart though. Was thinking how much less attention the game "Hawx" would attract if it didn't have "Tom Clancy's Hawx" name attached to it.

I'm not a fan of Tyler Perry stuff although I know I won't be able to get out of seeing the new Madea movie w/the girlfriend. I thought his characters were somewhat funny at first (Madea and Madea's brother), but gotten less and less funny with each of his movies. I had to get dragged kicking and screaming to see that "Why Did I Get Married" movie and it was actually very enjoyable seeing it in the theater because of how much the crowd [mostly women] was into it (was actually in a predominantly white are theater when I saw it). Was a pain watching it on dvd. But have avoided the other stuff because it always seems like corny rehashes.
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

I agree with this 110%! His work doesn't appeal to me, but anyone who puts their name in front of as much stuff as he does must be the most narcissistic person in the world who is struggling to overcome some sort of identity issues.

Either that or the company Perry works for knows that his name in front of movie titles sells tickets.

M Night Shyamalan, however, is a narcissistic prick who will make his name larger than the actual movie title on posters outside theaters. Tarantino is along the same lines, but at least his movies are good.

Bingo. Perry isnt a narcissist. His name is a great brand in the black community so putting it in front of a movie or show is good business.

Yeah, I don't deny it's good business, just annoying as hell when every other TBS commercial is "Tyler Perry's House of Payne with Tyler Perry and Tyler Perry, along with Tyler Perry".

The branding could as easily be accomplished by naming his production company, like National Lampoons or American Pie does in the name. Constantly using the director's name when the only other ones who do it today are narcissists makes him no different than the others are who fairly get that label.
