The branding could as easily be accomplished by naming his production company, like National Lampoons or American Pie does in the name. Constantly using the director's name when the only other ones who do it today are narcissists makes him no different than the others are who fairly get that label.

You dont know Perry's history. Most of his movies and 1 of his tv shows were originally plays. On the stage, they use the name of a writer/director in front of a show all the time (ex. Andrew Lloyd Webber). So he's just using the same title he used when he was doing plays.

To be honest, I dont see much of a difference in this than seeing Spielberg or Bay's names in huge letters in the trailer, television commercials and advertisments. Transformers.....DIRECTED BY MICHAEL BAY

I dont like defending Perry because I hate his films but the guy isnt a narcissist.

Yeah, I don't deny it's good business, just annoying as hell when every other TBS commercial is "Tyler Perry's House of Payne with Tyler Perry and Tyler Perry, along with Tyler Perry".

I agree that its annoying but I'll say this. That show is one of the top 5 rated shows in Cable and had one of the highest rated debuts in cable history. I dont think that happens if it was just called "House of Payne". I know many black people who wouldnt have watched the show if it wasnt for the name recognition.

Michael Bay is a much, much, much better comparison than Spielberg.

Speilberg is just as bad imo. I always know when a SS movie is coming out because his name is huge in the trailer and on posters.

I like his movies alright. I think they could be better if they focused more on the comedic aspect and lessen the touchy-feeling part, but they're still pretty good.

Heck, I've never watched a black movie that I didn't like. I don't know what it is, but black people make some really good movies!

Completely agree...I just find it annoying, but if I were them I'd do the exact same thing.

Hell, without those commercials I wouldn't know who the hell Tyler Perry was, nor would I know about his movies or tv show. Their advertising/branding is doing a good job.

Gotta give him credit, he worked hard to go from those small plays (which were always sold out) to doing movies.

I just don't like the mixed messages they send.

Simple equation:

Tyler Perry Madea Movie + City w/ a lot of Black People + Opening Weekend = A lot of sold out theaters.

I live about 30 min outside of DC and 20 outside of Baltimore. Where I live (which is majority white) the movie is playing in one theater. In the theater in my old neighborhood (majority black) its playing in 3.

Spielberg attaches his name to movies a lot, but Spielberg is arguably the greatest director of all time while Tyler Perry's movies are, as far as I can tell, almost exclusively for the Atlanta crowd.

It's like saying that "Denzel Washington stars in...", so Tracy Morgan should get billing like that too. No.

When Tyler Perry is involved with genre defining movies, I'll accept his name being on the title.

Well white people make up a significant chunk of that 60 million dollars. I would say 60 to 70 percent of these moviegoers are going to be black but alot will be non black. Also, I know a ton of black people who live in black neighborhoods but go to movies in white neighborhoods to get away from the foolishness in some black theaters (babies crying, cell phones, talking etc.)

I'm sorry but its primarily a black thing. Ive experienced this in Baltimore, DC, Atlanta and LA. You are more likely to run into a baby crying in a movie theater in a black neighborhood. Same goes for talking at the screen and the same goes for talking on cell phones. Not saying it doesnt happen at theaters with majority white theatergoers...just saying its more likely to happen in a black theater.
