Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
So after watching it a second time ...
SpoilerThe 2nd level is Arthur's dream right? If so, why is he getting attacked in it?Comment

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
SpoilerMy assumption was that all levels are overruled by the original/first level. What is true there will be true going forward. This helps explain why they can hear the music levels later and why the world moves/shifts at various levels."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

SpoilerIs it just his dream? Aren't they all hooked up to it? I think the attackers are projections/people from Fischer's dream.Comment

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
SpoilerIt's his dream but Fischer is the main subject of all of these dreams. I am under the impression that if one of the subconscious of the dreamer's is startled by intruders, like Cobb warned him about, the projections go after the dreamer.
It's Arthur's dream but Fischer's projections.Too Old To Game Club

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
Just watched this today and loved it. I think the fact that this thread can have such lengthy and deep discussion is another display of its brilliance. Most movies are pretty simple and formulaic, this movie was the opposite and so well done. They took what could have been described as a really confusing ideaSpoileri mean imagine trying to pitch a film about a limbo state within a dream within a dream within a dream
While it never gives a true 'ending' the fact that two people can watch the movie and think it ended in two different ways (like me and my buddy who i saw it with did) is truly brilliant.
Some of the dialog audio wasn't that great when i saw it so i'm really hanging out to get this on blu ray so i can watch it with the subtitles on.
TDK is still my fav Nolan flick but this has leapfrogged Memento into the number 2 spot imo.Comment

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
Saw it last night with my brother and a friend. Came home and talked it about with other friends that saw it earlier and we were basically split about what happened at the end. Here's my thoughts:
SpoilerI think he was still dreaming at the end. Why did the house, the kids, the weather, etc, all look exactly the same in the final scene as they had earlier in the movie? In regards to the top that was spinning when the movie went to black and the credits, I think Nolan knew exactly what he was doing. I don't think somebody who spent so much time on the script would leave the ending like that open to interpretation because that is big cop-out in storytelling. He knew what he was doing. Cobb was dreaming but had created this false reality within that dream, which to me, makes the top falling or spinning irrelevant. Cobb completed his journey and went back to what he thought was reality, and that's what matters. Not the top. The same problem that had affected his wife was actually affecting him subconsciously. After all, the whole movie was people dealing with their subconscious while making conscious decisions. Come on, that just doesn't work like that. Cobb could never admit it, but the whole time the entire thing was a dream set up to validate himself.

Spoilerbut isn't that more of a cop out? There is nothing worse than getting to end of a movie/show and they go "hey it was all just a dream". So are you saying that for the whole movie Cobb was sitting on a bed somewhere and they were all just dream's within dreams within dreams within dreams? I like to think that was reality at the end and he truly did get home. At least i prefer the movie if it does end that way so that's what i'm sticking with.

Spoilerwell it is and isn't. With a movie, if there's a whole story about somebody murdering a whole town and at the end the guy wakes up and realizes it was all sick dream he had, then that to me is a cop out. But I don't feel that way with Inception because the whole movie was about dreaming in the first place. It was about Cobb's struggle with himself and his mind. If the whole movie is a dream, like I think, then it's not a cop out, it's more of a definite ending because of the way it was done. Had Cobb woken up next to his wife and kids and it was later in the future because he just spent so much time in limbo, then that would be a cop out. I hope that kind of makes sense.
I mean, I want to hear from people who think it was reality. Why was everything at the end the exact same way he had seen it before? The kids were in the same spot on the lawn, the sun was shining the same, the house looked the same. While he was gone, who was at the house looking after his kids? Why hadn't they aged at all?
And take a look at the characters in the movie. You don't really learn much about them except for Fisher and Cobb. You don't know if these people have families or what type of music they like or food they like, I mean you just aren't given backstory on these people and I believe that was done on purpose because they are projections of Cobb's mind. They are just silhouettes. The only time there is a hint of substance was the few times Arthur feigned a love interest towards Ariadne.
Please feel free to correct me. I saw it last night and it was obviously a lot to take in so perhaps there are things I am missing/omitting.

Spoilerawww damn it now you have me totally unsure of which way to think!
Great post. Your point's about the kids not aging and looking exactly like they did in his dreams was a good point. I think i need to see it again....

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
Yeah I would like to see it again as well. Obviously I feel that the movie ended a certain way but perhaps when I see it again I'll see things differently. I am just glad that a movie like this is out and has so many people talking about it the way they are. You just don't see many major Hollywood releases like Inception any more, and that's a shame.Lux y VeritasComment

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception
I'll see it again on Blu-Ray.
Saw it Saturday and awesome movie! Kinda freaked my girlfriend out though, and for the rest of the night I was spinning coins on the table or asking if this was real or a dream and she'd get paranoid lol.
She went to the bathroom at some point and saw about 20ish people like her who were kinda freaked out, but I didn't think it was that bad (or I just enjoy that type of movie that questions everything).

SpoilerI don't believe it is a dream, for several reasons, first of all, the wedding band theory. Every time he was in a dream he had the wedding band on. These are things I have read, not seen myself, but they've been confirmed by people so I roll with it.
Secondly, I think that the kids have aged, as two sets of actors portrayed them on IMDB, one older than the other, and they are wearing different clothes(I think).Comment
