Masterpiece I completely understand why he spent 10 years writing this screen play

It was good. Really good. But I was kinda confused throughout. Would I see it again, possibly. But not as groundbreaking as people are making it to people all over the interwebs.

Overall, on first viewing I was a bit overwhelmed by the complexity and a bit underwhelmed by the whole product. I went into the film expecting the former, but nonetheless found myself struggling to fully digest what was thrown at me. I'll see it again, eventually, so perhaps I'll then be able to better cope and get a little more out of a 2nd viewing.

                One curiosity/question:

Re: Christopher Nolan + DiCaprio = Inception

I just got back from a morning showing today. I had avoided all reviews, interviews, discussion, trailers, etc for this film because I wanted to go in naked, as I did when I first saw Memento in some tiny theater in No Where, New Hampshire. The only thing I knew was that it involved dreams and stealing them (or, things from them).

Honestly, I expected this film to be more of a mind---- than it really is. I found it very easy to follow once the film explained how the dream invasion works (so really, the first few scenes of the film before we're introduced to the actual plot) and am a bit puzzled that so many reviewers (I came home and read a bunch after seeing it) expressed such confusion. It seems like the negative reviews are from those who expected something else. When the concept of dreams is invoked I think people automatically assume the fantastic, when really most dreams are based in reality (at least mine are). I believe some expected something along the lines of Big Fish or more reality warping effects. The ones used are effective and great fun while everything seems to conform to the reality Nolan created for this film.

The script is natural and the acting capable. Leo is so good in his roles that you quickly forget you're watching Leonardo DiCaprio and just accept him as whatever character he's playing. I love how Michael Caine finds a way into just about all of Nolan's films as he always lends an instant credibility to any scene he occupies. The special effects and fight choreography are the best of any of Nolan's works. If I have one complaint it's that the bad guys are atrocious shots. In spite of that though, this is an edge of your seat movie for a large duration of it and there's a gnawing fear that catastrophe could strike. This doesn't let up, ever really. I noticed during the final shot of the movie that I was holding my breath, and the film doesn't let you exhale, you almost have to force yourself to once you realize it's over.

                    As for the ending...

                    Spoiler

Ultimately, this film provided a very satisfying experience on the first viewing and I think it would hold up upon a second, or third. I doubt very much that I'll make it out to the theaters for repeat viewings (unless a friend wanted to go) but I'll surely purchase it when it hits the home video market. As for where it ranks amongst Nolan's films, I am unsure. From a directing perspective, it is his best. From a writing perspective, also probably his best. Beyond that, I don't much care. Choosing a favorite is an exercise in futility. I have so far loved his films and will continue to see anything with his name attached to it. I absolutely recommend people see this film and try not to be intimidated by its scope. Once you figure out the basic rules for this film you're free to lose yourself in the narrative and enjoy it for what it is.

I saw this last night and absolutely loved it. Just an incredible movie with so much depth and while there were areas that could be confusing it seemed to flow well and I was able to follow it. I will go see this again and have been recommending it to all my friends.

lol me too, I want to see him in more movies. I'm completely on the Joseph Gordon-Levitt bandwagon too, the last thing I saw him in was Angels In The Outfield and a couple episodes of 3rd Rock From The Sun so I couldn't believe all the hype there was around him but I'm gonna get 500 Days of Summer just to see his performance. I can't wait to see this movie again.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)
