    Metallica @ SXSW

Metallica was in town for SXSW to promote their upcoming video game, and they played a SUPRISE show at Stubbs BBQ on Friday night. It is a venue that holds 2000 people.

One of the most popular bands in the world and they played as hard at Stubbs as they do in a stadium filled with 90,000 or more. Not many bands do this type of thing anymore.

there were thousands of people outside of Stubb's listening. This is from the parking garage across the street

I've been to over a hundred shows, and I've never seen a band not play hard. It's a shame the culture that some popular bands have fostered.

true, but not often do you see a band that is used to playing in huge stadiums want to play in such a small venue

A lot, actually. It can be a chore to play big production shows, so a lot of bands appreciate the intimacy of a small venue. It reminds them of the early days and they get to be a little closer to the energy. Bands like Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Dream Theater do it pretty regularly. There are many others, but those are specific examples that pop into my brain.

true, and a lot of big bands do end up playing at SXSW, but none as huge as Metallica.

btw, Kanye West, Kid Cuddi, some other rappers on Kanye's label, and Little Boots all played a somewhat suprise show together (word got out pretty quick) at SXSW also in a smaller venue, and i heard that they tore it up.

One year I want to go to SXSW - at least before it starts getting a lot of major attention like Bonaroo is getting.

you really should man...a week of NON STOP music of all types, booze, and women (not in that order clearly) = one hell of a good time

of course you can get all of those things where you are, but the variety of music at SXSW is pretty incredible. It's quite a unique scene.

Yeah, I would still love to go to Bonaroo but I wish there was some kind of alt-country/bluegrass/blues festival in VA to go to. SXSW sounds like it would be crazy awesome - I just don't have the money to fund a trip like that yet.

WTF is up with the crowd? In the second video when Metallica comes out they're just standing around. Are there strict rules in that club?

Idk, if I were there, all hell would break loose like in St. Louis. I might have been onstage :x

the view in the second video shows the photographers, cameramen, security guards, and journalists at the front (it's SXSW). The crowd was obviously behind the camera view.

You see a wider view of the crowd in the first video. You cant see the crowd at all in the second video.

I would love to go to Bonaroo. It always has an insane lineup. That is an entirely different ballgame than SXSW though. Bonaroo is more of a festival of big names. Austin has a lot of festivals, including the City Limits festival in September, but it doesnt seem as big as Bonaroo.

SXSW does have huge names show up every year, because they like the vibe of it, and so many music junkies come to town to watch non stop music....but it isnt really a festival. SXSW is more of a showcase of up and coming bands from all over the world playing in smaller clubs in front of a bunch of industry people and journalists that come to town to find talented artists. That is why it was such a suprise to see Metallica play. They are definitely the biggest band that has ever played SXSW.

speaking of blue grass and country....there is a good share of that at SXSW but more of it during the rest of the year. During most of the year there is a lot of it to be found on any given night at clubs in Austin, and at other festivals in the town throughout the year. There is actually a festival coming up on April 16th in Austin called the "old settlers festival" that features bluegrass and country.

During the "old settlers festival" people camp out by the river for 3 days and this year bands like Robert Earl Keen, Bodeans, The Gourds, Travelin McCoury's, The Greencards, Fred Eaglesmith, Hayes Carll, Dave Allen and the Guilty Women, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Gibson Brothers, and a lot of other country/folk/bluegrass bands will be playing. It is quite a party.
