Lol @ changing your top 5 list completely because someone said there were no pre-1992 guys on there (I'm shocked noone from your original 5 made the "new cut"). Your list is your list. Music is all about preference. I already posted my top 5 earlier in here (Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Ghostface Killah).

My top 5/10 fluctuates a lot though. Jadakiss for example, fell after his last release.

Naw...I just "revised" it to fit the LITERAL parameters stumble was eluding to.

My Top 5 Alive of:

1. Talib Kweli
2. Black Thought
3. Phonte and Big Pooh of Little Brother
4. Siagon
5. Lupe

...still stands. These are my most favorite CURRENT rappers.

The other list is an 'all-time' of sorts of guys still alive.

Staying on topic....

I really like Asher Roth(on his mixtape), but I wouldn't make any comparisons to Eminem.

So far very, very disappointed with Asher's album. Seems really stupid. Weed, girls, beer...got it. I expected much more after his mixtape. At least there's always Lupe.

I'm with you, man. I really dig Greenhouse Effect (his mixtape), and was expecting similar from the album. Sadly, it's pretty lackluster.

I do suggest people who are judging him only on "I Love College" and/or his album check out his mixtape here:

The Greenhouse Effect was solid. I liked it a lot. I was so confused what happened between then and his album. His album is terrible. There are only a few songs I like on it and they don't exactly blow me away either.

Rap is just so personal and everyone has different tastes.

It's very interesting to the analyst in me. Look at all these top 5 lists, some could include rappers a lot of us may not have even heard of. Just so many different artists people like.

In other musical genres I'm willing to bet that on people's top 5 we'd at least know of the band...I can't imagine that many Rock lists coming up with a top 5 entry I had no clue who he/she/they were, you know? But with rap there are great guys with mixtapes and stuff that I'd have no clue existed until now.

Hope that makes sense, just something I found interesting...

Yeah, like I could never see anyone putting a guy like Kweli on the top of their "best MCs" list, but obviously something connected and he's his favorite, which is cool. I can't explain why I sit around listening to Devin the Dude talk about weed, beer, and ***** for 5 hours straight, but I do haha..

I have trouble even making Top 5 lists because I like so many different things about MCs and have trouble deciding if I take longevity, inoovation, etc. into account or just list who I like listening to the most. I always end up editing the lists or putitng in caveats...

yea thats actually why i didnt say any thing about him. Its not fair to judge off one song but i wont be listening to that song again. Also im not as big a fan of rap as i used to be so that probably factors in some. In fact i just dont listen to music very much at all anymore.

But for topic sake, Hes no where near eminem. His voice may sound similar, but thats it. IMO

I copped his mixtape before, and it's not bad.


I mean, I don't know. It's not great, and it's a lot better than the album. A few songs were pretty enjoyable, but his weird randomness is nowhere near Em's weird randomness. Asher will tell you that he likes boobies n pancakes in a simple rhyme scheme. Em would rather get struck by lightning twice at once/ die and come back as vanilla ice's son.
