    Re: Getting a new HDTV

I've been hearing conflicting things, I know obviously that 720p isn't as good as 1080p but if I'm only a few feet away, is it really worth it?

I've heard a lot of good things about Vizio here, so it is really a good brand to buy?

Sorry if this has been asked, I'm just VERY conflicted and having a lot of difficulty on choosing a TV to buy. Right now my budget is $450-$600 and I'm looking at 32", but can't get one choosen.

I don't want to go too cheap and chance it with like a SPECTRE (newegg - $450), but want to save up $700 bucks or so. Quality matters to me, but I'll be doing DVD's, PC, Gaming and TV - not blu-ray.

Suggestions? (if anyone here has bought a decently priced 32" that they like, please post or pm me the model - I'd appreciate it)

With your budget ($450-600) you could get a 32" HDTV from just about any brand you want. Vizios do a good job with their LCDs...I happen to have a 720p 32inch Vizio.

For $597+ tax you can get a 37" 1080p Vizio LCD from Walmart. You'll be hard pressed to find more bang for your buck.

Vizio is as far down on the budget brand line that I would go. No Emersons, Viores, etc.

Two things. Since you have a 720p...should I just stick to 720p with a 32 inch? I am only a few feet away and I don't want to lose significant quality.

As for Vizio's, they're good and I have a lower budget because it's for my bedroom and I'm not going to play blue-rays, infact it'll mostly be TV and 360. Would something like that be okay or would I be better off saving up to get a 1080p 32"?

        EDIT: I just saw a 1080p Vizio for $517:

One more question...since I could go with about any brand in that range for a 32 inch, should I try and stick with or avoid Vizio? (I know you said they're good, I just didnt know if I should try and go with someone like Samsung, Panasonic, LG, etc. or if they're just as good)

Okay thanks. Now would I be better off with the 1080p? (it's an extra 90 bucks, but still in my budget range)

It's probably not necessary because the TV is small. I say save that $100.00 for a rainy day...

I ended up buying that phillips from sams club that was posted earlier in this thread. What an absolutely amazing television. I have been blown away thus far.

Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic will give you a better picture, but I wouldn't say enough to warrant their price difference with the Vizio. Definitely go into your store of choice and see them in action and decide if the difference is worth the price increase.

At 32 inches, 720p is plenty....1080p at that size would be giving away $100, IMO. You need to be closer to 50+ inches to make 1080p a deciding factor.

Are you limited to a space that can only fit 32 inches? My only regret is not going with a 37 inch Vizio instead of a 32 inch. If I had it to do over, I would have paid that $80-90 difference and gotten 37 inches. (Which the link I provided earlier 37inches AND 1080p)

Good luck in your search. It's good you're doing your homework now. I'm doing the same with HD projectors.

For the 32 inches thing - I'm not 100% sure. I have an old CRT, I think 31 inch, with about 3 inches on each side of room. I think I'll measure to be sure because yeah, $597 for a 37"inch would be worth the extra money. It's a good $150 extra, but also seems better quality. (1920 resolution also temps me) And if I moved my stand to the right a bit I think I may be able to do it since the LCD stands are smaller and width wise I think I'd be fine.

Thanks for the help though. I'll have enough tomorrow but in all likelihood won't be able to get it until the following Tuesday. (whichever one I get...it'll very likely either be the Vizio 32" or 37") Now to just wait...

You may already know this, but in case you don't...

Standard def TV size is not the same as HDTV size.

For example: a 32" HDTV is fairly close to a 27" Standard Def tv in terms of viewing distance. The 37" HDTV would be equal to a 30" Standard Def tv in terms of viewing distance.

Yeah I had forgotten about that till I had mentioned me having a 31" and thinking of the size stuff. I'll probably go for the 37" then, can't go wrong for an extra 5" and 1080p. A little big for a bedroom, but I don't care.

Just wanted to post to say that I've gotten the Vizio! The 37" to be exact.

$635 altogether with tax and it fits perfectly on my stand. I've had it for like 30 minutes but love it so far, can't wait to get HD with DirecTV or Dish.

Congrats man. You're living my dream. Wish I had gone 37 inch in the bedroom, but it's all good.

Once you get the HD programming it will all be worth it. Trust me.

Is it easier to justify moving it to another room to make space for a new one.

If you can wait, Black Friday should have some pretty good deals on LCDs. Can't believe how much the price has fallen in the past 6 months.
