Watched She's Out of My League the other night. Typical romantic comedy with a predictable storyline, but it had its funny moments and I thought some of the secondary characters were hilarious. I'd recommend.Patriots

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Watched two 1950s films today
Wagon Master (1950)
This John Ford film is probably the most subdued and unassuming movie he ever directed in the western genre. It's basically about two young drifters guiding a Mormon wagon train down the San Juan Valley and the trials and tribulations of their trek.
The movie is also populated with character actors and rising stars in big roles. One such actor who got a much bigger role than normal was Ward Bond who was one of the better character actors of the period who played the wagon master Elder Wiggs. The two young drifters were portrayed by a couple of guys who would grow in stature in Hollywood in Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.
The movie had a sanguine and easy going feeling to it so there wasn't much to really grip your attention but it's a pleasant way to waste an hour and a half. It's also notable for having probably the most positive portrayal of indians in any Ford western.
The next movie I watched is one of the great films of the '50s and the last film of Humphrey Bogart's career.
The Harder They Fall (1956)
This was one of the most scathing and critical looks at the boxing industry ever made as Bogart plays Eddie Willis who is a down on his luck ex sportswriter who ends up taking the money from a shady manager and his cronies in hyping up and fixing matches for a powderpuff puncher with a glass jaw in Toro Moreno. This film holds no punches when it came to exposing the seedier side of the business what with payoffs, fixing matches, treating fighters like they're animals all for the sake of making the big bucks.
Bogart's character very soon realizes how much crap he's in by associating with these guys and he fights very hard to make sure that Toro is treated right but conflicted by his need for the dough and carrying on the charade of "The Great Toro"
The turning point occurs after the challenger to the champ takes on Moreno in a fixed fight but due to his previous fight with the champ he's heading into the ring with an obvious brain injury. The bout with Toro is what triggers the bleeding in the challenger (Buddy Brannen played by former boxing great Max Baer) who ends up dying.
Bogart gives a great subdued and world weary performance partly by design and partly due to the fact that he was dying of cancer at the time. Rod Steiger plays his scuzzball manager role of Nick Benko with flair and gusto often overacting to the point of near parody hence the great contrast in scenes with Bogart who underplayed his role.
Another former boxing great Jersey Joe Walcott played Toro's trainer George with eloquence and calm. In fact, the movie doesn't really have any bad performances at all. There's even a great (and heartbreaking in a way) scene where Bogart's friend who's a sports reporter tries to dissuade Bogie from carrying on with his work with Benko by showing film of him interviewing an old fighter who is so far gone that he wasn't making sense and was completely addled. In short, the old fighter definitely took on the full effect of concussions through his career.
This is a great film that contains one of the best final performances by any big name actor. Bogart's career certainly ended in a flourish. Unfortunately Bogart died from Cancer 2 weeks after his 57th birthday shortly after this film was released.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The Mrs and I watched 'The Tourist' last night starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. A pretty solid flick from beginning to end but nothing too amazing. Overall it was an enjoyable way to pass a few hours. 3/5 from me....Comment

Monsters. I found it incredibly slow moving and the ending was bad. I didn't care for it all."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." SidVish"I thought LeBron James was just going to be another addition to help me score."

I watched This Could Be the Night on TCM.
I'm mentioning it because I've got the name wrong 3 times since watching when looking up more about it. It's where the current quote in my sig is from. There were a lot of really good/funny quotes in it.Comment

Dark City - It was ok, not great. I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Ghost in the Shell II - Innocence - Not very good in my opinion. I found it to be not as good as the show or the first movie. The animation is great but the story is weak and not living up to the standards of their prior material.
Amadeus the directors cut - The added scenes from the cutting room floor do not make this movie better at all. In fact it detracts from the movie. There are several scenes that they cut from the original that make the movie feel real "awkward". It really changes the feel of the movie and how you view the characters then the original. I stopped watching about more than halfway in after just not liking how it was going.
Road Warrior- Love this movie can watch it again and again and again. Final action sequence is legend and burned into my memories.
The Fantastic Mr Fox - Love this movie. Every time it came on on HBO I had to watch it. I especially like Clooney's voice over in this movie. One of my favorite scenes is where the Rat and Fox are about to fight and they have a weird conversation about Fox's wife and her "promiscuity" when they were young. The Rats voice is hilarious and I could not believe William Dafoe did his voice. One of the more funnier movies I have seen.
Up in the Air - Really liked this movie a lot as well. I love the cinematography of the shots of the city from a birds eye view as well as the music they used when they traveled (going home is the song I believe). The conversations they had were great and I really enjoyed the plot and the story immensely. Really good movie.Last edited by catcatch22; 03-16-2011, 02:51 PM.Comment
