    Captain Phillips.

Tom Hanks = wonderful as usual. His physical and emotional nuances really drew me in to his character and the overall story/predicament. And for a rookie actor - Barkhad Abdi - holy smokes son!!!!! Blown away by his performance. Sincerely hope he gets a supporting Oscar nomination! I ended up liking this movie far more than i thought i would, going in.

Thanks for the review. This is one movie that I will eventually see as I was intrigued by the "based on real life" aspect of the film and of course Tom Hanks. Sounds like it's pretty damn good.

Anywho, just watched a pretty good taut western Rawhide (1951) on TCM tonight. The movie stars Tyrone Power and Susan Heyward and has a very solid cast in front and behind the scenes. The movie is a remake of a gangster/crime flick which sees Power and Heyward holed up at a stagecoach stop by 3 criminals.

The head crook is a pretty educated guy who's wanted for killing his wife and her outside lover, a common crook, a one horse horse thief who isn't really all that bad of a guy (It's strongly implied that he'll live the rest of his days a free man by film's end) and a sadistic bastard of a guy played by none other than Jack Elam who made a living playing A-hole baddies in westerns.

There's a good amount of suspense and drama packed into this and if I can find the original flick I may do a full compare/contrast review on my blog at some point.

Wizard of Oz 3D. Already a classic. The 3D is very good...adds to the experience. Recommend

Star Trek into Darkness 3D. Was my favorite movie this summer. Really enjoyed the 3D. Don't think I'll ever bother with the 2D version.

I just saw Oz the Great and Powerful myself yesterday.
I really liked this movie as a prequel and think they did a great job of trying to tie it in to the original.

One thing it absolutely did was take my crush on Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis to lofty new heights!

              Godzilla vs Megalon (1973)

Just a gawd awful Godzilla movie, shows little to no imagination, annoying human characters, Godzilla is a bit player in a movie that's ostensibly his starring vehicle and the introduction of the robot Jet Jaguar is basically the reason for the movie being made in the first place!

This is not a very good Godzilla movie and is easily the worst. The other two extremely poor Godzilla movies at least had something going for them as one was a misguided attempt at an art house style and the other was experimenting on the format.

This is just bad with no kitschy element to it and is a total waste to a real good looking monster in Megalon.

About a teacher who hits rock bottom because of a drinking problem. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aaron Paul, and Nick Offerman all star. Decent enough film.

Sorta reminded me of a poor man's Blue Valentine.

                            Sincerely Yours (1955)

Did you know Liberace made a movie? Oh yes he did and it was one of the biggest flops of classic Hollywood. It was such a flop that he never got to star in a movie again aside from a couple cameos in comedic films.

So is it as bad as its reputation? Not really, it's pretty damn hokey at times and Liberace ain't an actor but he was amiable enough. The major drawback is that the story is pretty worn even at that point in time and they overloaded it with Liberace playing the piano. When you have the star of the movie playing tunes almost constantly for nearly 2 hrs it can be pretty grating.

Luckily for Liberace they surrounded him with some pretty good actors and when there wasn't any piano playing the movie moved well enough. I will say this, Liberace was a far better pianist than I ever gave him credit for.

Unfortunately the movie was overlong and I found myself looking at the clock quite often towards the end. I give this ** stars because it isn't as bad as the reputation makes it out to be and there were some elements I enjoyed like the scene where he plays the boogie woogie and goes through the history of that kind of piano playing.

Oh yes, Liberace kissed his female lead more than once and there's proof on the ol' blog too!

Watched Pacific Rim sans the big screen. Didn't have good re-watch value for me after seeing it large in the theaters. The novelty was gone for the most part. But certainly enjoyed it much on the first showing.

                                World War Z

Like others, just Redbox'ed it. I was multitasking for the first half-hour of the film while grading, but followed along just fine (missed some dialogue, but it was mostly because loud moments were too loud and when I had to turn it down in the house I just couldn't hear the words that were said).

Since Quantum of Solace, Marc Forster has done a much better job with his "action" work. But of course, a different editor, cinematographer, composer, and cast will change all of that as well. Didn't much like the CGI in this film, and I think that was my initial turn-off when I saw the trailers.

One thing that really surprised me was the PG-13 rating. I guess the amount that I think they got away with was interesting, or maybe it's more of the fact that I don't see too many zombie movies with this rating. I think it makes the world around it more powerful though, because you know Forster and crew aren't just doing it for the gory moments.

Needless to say, the third act was definitely the most interesting, probably because it reminded me a lot of The Last of Us (which I'm still not close to finishing). It was an okay film overall, and I'm glad the trailers were relatively concealing. I was satisfied with the ending and think it ultimately had the right balance between action & thrills / mystery & exposure, especially for a summer release that easily could have done poorly despite Brad Pitt being cast (who was nicely mellow for the part... good pick up).
