    The Bourne Legacy

Pretty good. Had a lot of tie-ins to the previous three films, and did a serviceable job making sure it didn't stray too far away. It definitely felt different though, but not like Identity did from Supremacy and Ultimatum. Obviously no Damon, but there's a different score and a different attitude.

The three acts were very distinguishable, with the first being the best. Renner is maturated with every film I see him in, and he is a good sell-job for a high-profile assassin. There has to be a film where Bourne and Cross either duel or match up. Probably would be better than Batman versus Superman.

This film was a bit short on foot pursuits and lacked an "epic fight," and as I said it just didn't have the same feel as the last three. The only scenes which did, in fact, were the ones with Edward Norton, who started off as a very strong character and ultimately didn't have much by the end.

This is one of the better looking and sounding Blu-rays ever, though. The fidelity was amazing. I paused moments and rewound certain effects that just had to be heard over and over again. Oh, and this contains probably one of the most realistically shocking and disturbing scenes for a PG-13 film that I have ever seen. It was so tough to sit through just for how visceral it felt. Well-directed, but wasn't like Greengrass so it is definitely not the Bourne of old.

I didn't feel like it broke a trilogy though, so that's good. It's almost a spin-off, and I'm okay with that.

To whomever said they'd never seen LA Confidential, you should remedy that situation as soon as humanly possible. If I had to make a list of the 20 best films of the last 20 years, it would certainly make it on there.

That was me. I saw the first half hour a couple of weeks ago, then football came on and life came in the way the last two weeks. I hadn't played a single video game (with the exception of a few rounds of KillZone on Vita) and didn't watch a single film. Just school, work, coaching, sleep... in whatever order.

I'll try and watch the rest later today... again, after coaching and football.

          Peeping Tom (1960)

This is NOT what you think it is despite the title!

This is my first (and not the last) foray into British Cinema and it's one fraught with tragedy as this movie destroyed the film career of director Michael Powell. This movie caused so much scandal and consternation that it was heavily censored in Britain and roundly lambasted in the critical press. Over the years it became an underground favorite and has now gotten it's richly deserved due thanks to Martin Scorsese for bringing it back to the public's attention.

So what exactly did it do to kill a famous director's career? Well the story is about young Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) who has a carries a camera with him everywhere he goes as he is compelled to record women as he scares them by lifting one of the legs of the camera's mini tripod revealing a sharp edge as he threatens (and carries through) with stabbing the women in the throat recording their last moments of terror. He meets and befriends a young woman named Helen (Anna Massey, the daughter of Raymond BTW) who he begins to have feelings for. He never wants to film her but she has a curiosity about his film work etc etc. To top it off, his serial killing leads to an investigation by the police and he's a prime suspect.

The movie is very tame by today's standards but for the time the idea of young man who is attractive on the outside but is a complete mess mentally was very shocking. Powell makes great use of POV shots via the camera to show the killings and the lead up to them is pretty unsettling as he puts the fear of God into these women.

The exploration of voyeurism by means of a camera echoes that of Hitchcock's Rear Window but goes a few steps further showing how something as innocent as using a camera can be deadly. There are other themes involved such as the one of outward beauty belying a completely screwed up person.

It's a bit of a slow film and I could see some modern movie watchers not really liking this but this movie gets my heartfelt recommendation.

It's a Criterion film and I believe those are available on Netflix so you should be able to find it there if you're interested and it's also available to buy a DVD at Amazon.

BTW if you think I posted a lot here there are couple different observations on my blog.

Watched The Conjuring last night after a guy at work the other day said it was one of the scariest movies he's ever seen.

After watching it, I have to agree. I can't count how many times I jumped. Very good movie. I'm typically not into the paranormal stuff, but this one I really enjoyed.

I watched it last night again too, after having seen it in theaters. Liked it in theaters well enough to purchase it, and last night solidified it where I enjoyed it significantly more, and was equally as creeped out.

Wan did very well with the overall production of the film. Great video and audio.

Great write up on Peeping Tom. I have the Criterion disc too, have had it for years. Incredible how it destroyed the career of Michael Powell, who had made some of the most classic British films of all time. Really a sad tale.

I've seen it, laughed my butt off. Most people don't like fart and dick jokes, and maybe this makes me immature, but the delivery of those lines were absolutely hilarious.

Last night I saw The Raven, and I have to say it was really good. I'm not one to review movies, because there's probably been only one movie I've seen that I truly thought was garbage (21 and Over) which means I either only watch really good movies or I find almost all movies to be good. But it was very suspenseful, I thought the acting was great, and overall it was exactly what I was looking for, a good thriller. I was a bit disappointed with the end though, I felt like we had a really good mystery on our hands and there were a series of clues left but the killer revealed himself, which I thought was a but lame. But I would recommend watching it.

EDIT: So I'm on the IMDB message boards and lots of people found it to be bad. To each his own I guess. Like I said I rarely find movies to be bad.

Yeah that was the thing. There was a lot of that raunchy humor but it was delivered so well I laughed quite a bit.

Watched American History X again last night. Fantastic movie and Norton is terrific, except ironically, the last scene. I found him strangely unconvincing there.

Teen Wolf - I found this a lot better and funnier this time than any other time I've seen the movie, though, admittedly I've never really seen the movie in its entirety since it was once a TBS/TNT staple when I was younger. Apart from the distractingly low-budget, junior-high skilled basketball scenes the movie is charming and strikes the same chords as a lot of coming of age 80s films. While the surface moral tale is about being yourself the base of the story is really about conformity and assimilation which is a direct contrast to what they're ultimately trying to do.

I felt the same way about Brad Pitt in 'Se7en'.

However, AHX I loved all the way through. Had all my kids watch it, and I think it actually helped my stepson with the anger he carried around towards his father.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Don't expect this on my blog as well....It doesn't really match the mission statement of said blog (though if I watch one of these movies and it completely blows away expectations I will put up one review) with that being said I watched a schlock hit of the early '80s Joysticks (1983).

This flick was helmed by low budget director extraordinaire Greydon Clark who's probably best known to general audiences for a couple flicks (Without Warning (1980) and (La Bamba) The Forbidden Dance (1990)) who came up with the idea for this movie while at a screening in San Antonio. Basically he saw a lineup of teenagers in front of a video game arcade and thought it would be a topical idea for a movie and thus Joysticks was born.

Basically it's a teen sex comedy with the usual storyline with the uber civic minded adult wanting to shut down what the kids enjoy. (the video arcade) The antagonist in the flick is played by Joe Don Baker who gives a pretty good performance and was professional in his role. His character had a couple dimwitted nephews who provided good (if very sophmoric humor)

Of course the main drive of the flick was the usual teen comedy hi jinxs though I must say the protagonists had a very appealing persona. Even the main dweeb of the film had a good personality and was part of the gang. I even thought they were going for a semi Jerry Lewis vibe with him.

Anywho, it was just about what you'd expect but it was enjoyable and the use of old time videogames and such is a real time capsule to that period in teen culture.

No real rating just saying it was okay for what it was.
