Cafe Hostess (1940)

This is a solid little B noir that is a nice little gem of a film. It's basically about a hooker (it's never explicitly said but the film makes it very obvious) wanting to get out from under her night club owner/pimp/gangster boss. She meets a guy who's your typical knight in shining armor who she wants to live a new life with. The movie has a neat stylistic touch with the beginning and ending bookending themselves and the whole "wanting to leave the sordid life of a hooker" theme is well done despite the love interest being poorly written and paper thin.

I write a bit more about it but despite it sounding like not such a great flick, it's actually pretty good and has a nice dark, gritty atmosphere to it. The actors all have this grungy, tough, and in the case of the main villain, slimy quality that really sells the seediness of the situation.

It's a good rare little B noir gem that I rather liked because it was honest about the subject matter though the love interest sinks the movie a bit.

Repulsion (1965)

Polanski's sophomore film (commonly mistaken as his debut by many) is a psychological thriller disguised as a horror movie. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, even in its "ugly" spots, but beyond that I find this film to be very overrated. The pacing is rather slow (just like modern horror films) and the story in and of itself isn't very good. The acting is also pretty lackluster all-around. The "twist" at the end is actually pretty cool though and was ahead of its time. All in all, the direction and cinematography make this one still worth the watch, but overall this film doesn't stack up to Polanski's debut (Knife in the Water), nor the next feature (Cul-de-sac) he made after this one.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

Watched Dark Knight Rises for the first time since the theater. Much better movie second time around, imo

Late night Netflix browsing, watched Escape from LA. Cheesy? Sure. Still a great movie.

You might have a slight point there. I think Keaton was PERFECT as Bruce Wayne. His Batman was adequate, maybe even a bit stiff but you know what? I think that's a great way of interpreting the character as I think that's how a real life rich guy would be Batman. One aspect I liked about Keaton is that his Batman was pretty much even keeled and determined as opposed to Christian Bale who tried to be a force of nature what with that annoying gravelly voice and being all "I'm the Goddamned Batman!" in his persona. I also found that Bale was too busy being super serious with no room for other emotions. Yes, Keaton's Batman was pretty serious but I always got the feeling that he'd eventually lighten up at some point. His Batman looked like a guy who'd eventually have a Robin, Bale does not.

Exactly. Batman Returns is my favorite Batman film, if only for little moments like turning the Batmobile around to roast the fire breathing clown at the start of the film. Even with the new "trilogy" of Bale films, which I do like, Keaton is still a solid Batman.

I was able to watch a couple of movies the other day via the 'Flix and other.

The Class of '92(Sports Doc on Manchester United, ala 30 for 30) and Prince Avalanche(Paul Rudd movie)

Die Hard - I consider this a Christmas movie much to my girlfriend's dismay. Anyway, I always forget how much of a comedy a lot of the dialogue actually is.

Snitch with Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper (one of my favorite actors), Jon Bernthal (Shane from TWD), and Benjamin Bratt.

Typical action movie but one of The Rocks movies that I thought was above average. Strong cast but Jon Bernthal seemed to still be in The Walking Dead mode. LOL!

Fruitvale Station - A movie about the BART shooting in Oakland which made headlines a few years back. Its mainly about the last days of Oscar Grant and the incident at the station.

I didnt expect much from a first time director but I was wrong. The director has a good sense of what the scene is like in Oakland. The actors talk and act Oakland. I remember the main character who plays Oscar Grant as that Wallace kid from HBO's The Wire and Chronicles.

After watching this I have nothing but sympathy for Grant and his family. Fruitcake Station isn't for everyone but personally I really enjoyed it. 8/10.

Watched a couple movies, not one to write up a lengthy post on each.....

Red 2 - I enjoyed the first one, didnt care for the second one nearly as much and not even sure why but just didnt appeal to me nearly as much as the first one did.

2 Guns - Enjoyed this movie quite a bit, had some solid action and Mark Wahlberg had some good lines throughout the movie that made me laugh.

The Family - Didnt see a lot on this but was intrigued since it had De Niro and Pfeiffer in it and I really liked it, thought the story telling was solid, thought any time they tried to interject comedy it was done well and the payoff at the end was pretty solid.

Tonight is Don Jon then The Wolverine and Man of Steel to come.

American Hustle

David O'Russell is taking American audiences by storm with his recent films, and he is really forming a good style that's instantly recognizable. Taking actors from both The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook (minus Wahlberg, Leo, and Tucker), the cast ended up being super strong and took front stage in an okay plot. Though in the end, it kind of just felt like actors in 70s clothing. For me, that was completely fine because I was in it for that anyway, but if this movie was played again in fifteen years for our now ten-year-olds who might not know who any of these actors are, I'm not as sure they'll "get it" as much as we do, especially after seeing his previous two films.

Outside of that, it was a strong narrative and had some witty humor. I wouldn't say it had as much emotion as The Fighter or Silver Linings Playbook, and in the end I'd say it just wasn't as good of a movie as the other two, but with the throwback elements I think a lot of OS'ers will like this film. It had a great soundtrack and killer cinematography. I just wish he re-shot The Fighter again after having done two projects, because I think he would have added a bit more soul to it, especially in the boxing scenes.

I'd recommend this one.

EDIT: Don't let the upbeat trailers hype you up too much into thinking that's the pace of this film. It's slow-moving, and that's okay if you don't expect a lot of flash from it. This isn't Luhrmann's Gatsby.

Saw this tonight as well. I liked it. Agree with you in that it's not as good as The Fighter or Silver Linings Playbook. I gave it an 8/10.

I scored it an 8/10 on IMDb myself.

If Amy was ever in any shell back when, she is definitely coming out of it in her films with O'Russell. Jennifer Lawrence was able to "grow older" for this film too, which was kind of cool.
