I am a huge fan of the first and second films and this one was a swing and a miss. Felt like they went through the motions as I had no care for the actual story. It is a different feel from the first two....as it takes place in 1981 and is more of a murder story weaved with the supernatural vs a haunting.

I prefer the first two far more and they were also a lot more scary. This movie depended on pure jump scares instead of atmosphere.

James Wan did not direct it and it was obvious.
I saw it last night as well, and I currently share the same sentiment (and I apologize as my thoughts will be very scattered).

I say "currently" because my experience last night probably was not maximized. My movie theater's sound was not great, for some reason the ceiling lights were always on (they dimmed when it started but never turned off), and I caught a 10:40 PM showing where... not that I was nodding off necessarily... but that my brain caught higher levels of disengagement as I felt more tired. I'll definitely give it another go at some point, but I'm definitely in no rush.

You're right it was obvious that Wan didn't direct though, and that was constantly in the back of my mind as well. Nothing was shot as competently, not by a long shot. And it may be that I haven't seen some of the other films in a while (though I rewatched 2 a few months ago before I even knew this was coming out), but my memory of the better films in this universe (Conjuring 1 + 2 and Annabelle: Creation) are that they built very evil tension and had effective jump scares.

It's hard to call this one "unrealistic" and have the other films be perfectly acceptable, but you're right that this one had a different level of groundedness that I was having trouble working with. I just don't think the story was as good (the A-storyline was fine, but everything else was a bit eh). Any time it wasn't elevating to more supernatural levels though, I just found to be a little flat. While watching I was fine with how they skipped certain scenes for pacing sake, but now looking back I'm thinking: "Shoot, this movie would've probably been much scarier if they had filmed that moment." And it's not that this one has to be super scary or anything, as The Conjuring 2 uses all of its scares in the first half of the film itself then devotes the rest to story, but I thought it told its story better and its sense of direction strung the audience along well. This one falls into the curse concept, and honestly it just loses my engagement.

Definitely much more underwhelming than the other two films, which I feel unsettled by while watching. This one ran the gamut with having good characters and fine acting, but that was just about it. Maybe a good scene here and there (I enjoyed the first half hour the most), but this one was definitely disappointing... and I neither knew this was coming out nor have I seen anything on it until just seeing the movie.

Well the Conjuring 3 was more about the love Ed and Lorraine had for each other then it being an actual scary movie. Now far as the universe timeline, it goes like this:

      The Nun - 1952
      Annabelle Creation - 1958
      Annabelle - 1970
      The Conjuring - 1971
      Annabelle Comes Home - 1972
      The Conjuring 2 - 1977
      The Conjuring 3 - 1981

Never mind was what "about" (which I would argue The Conjuring 2 focused on that quite a bit as well), but when it attempted to present evil or scares it was elementally not on the same level as the first two films, at least not what I experienced (and I already admitted I wasn't watching it with the best of circumstances).

Anyway, Michael Chaves also directed The Curse of La Llorona, which should also technically be part of The Conjuring universe.

This is probably the straightest role I've ever seen Eddie in and because of that Reinhold's Billy really pushes the movie to a level worth watching again. The action scenes are horribly dated and more akin to an A Team shootout considering how terrible those goons shoot. Meanwhile, Billy is a cold blooded crack shot. Overall a fun watch and Eddie's charisma really makes what should have been a mediocre film into a really enjoyable and entertaining movie.

I mean I guess you can say The Curse of La Llorona is part of the universe, since the preacher that is briefly in the movie says he saw this doll 2 years ago(Annabelle) and it made him a believer. That is really the only connection. Far as the The Curse movie itself, it had some goofy parts in it and some plot holes. If anybody is interested, it is on HBOMax as well.

Dude gets thrown onto a buffet bar in a country club by Eddie and 30 years later finally redeems himself in Breaking Bad.

Still need to watch 48 Hours and go through Bad Boys 1 and 2 again along with the Lethal Weapons.

Aaaand it just took me until now to realize that I get HBO MAX with my summer subscription with HBO. Guess I get to rewatch The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It on there.

Pretty soon I'd like to also check out Those Who Wish Me Dead.

Was over a friends house last night and watched something called Ghost Team. It was supposed to be about a bunch of amateur ghost hunters investigating a house but instead came across a meth lab instead. Wew boy.

Tony Scott! Fancy suits! A red hot Ferrari! From the onset the sequel flaunts it's obvious budget increase, but nowhere is it more noticeable than having Scott at the helm. Scenes are tighter and shot in such a way to make everything more compelling, intimate, and urgent than the previous film. Eddie's charisma is on overload and he outshines the rest of the cast this time. Billy not being the green detective leaves Reinhold with a more closet case psychopath than a goofball, but he still shines so whatever. I didn't really feel anything about the villain or his plot since there's no personal connection apart from the Chief getting shot at the beginning. That's quickly swept aside as he's out of any danger within minutes. Apart from that everything else is ratcheted up a level and benefits from it making 2 a better film overall.

If Beverly Hills Cop is the novella then 2 is certainly the expanded novel.

The Wrath of Man - 9 out of 10. Very good movie.

The Virtuoso - 10 out of 10. This is now the best movie I saw this year. That ending was something else. IMO this is what the Hitman movie should have been. They nailed this movie, probably the best assassin movie I ever saw. It wasn't cheesy or overly masculine badass. Just clean and simple.

When Eddie (Axel) takes over that house (sending off the entire construction team so he can move in and stay there while on the case) I was pissing my pants. Classic Axel Foley.

Saw the Parent Trap (1998) again and then saw for the first time the 1961 version with Haley Mills, Maureen O'Hara, and Brian Keith. The newer version was significantly better simply because the older flick didn't have the emotional connections between characters that the 1998 movie had.

I know Haley Mills didn't do much after that film but she certainly wasn't terrible in it.
