The Night of the Hunter (1955) starring Robert Mitchum as a serial killer. This is supposed to be considered an all time great and although Mitchum is very good his actions contrasted with lets say Ralph Fiennes on Philip Seymour Hoffman in Red Dragon seem awfully tame. Boring-Mitchum was a lot scarier in the original Cape Fear.

A Quiet Place Part II

This was magnificent.

I liked the first film, but wasn't over the moon with it. I also thought it was a bit of lightning in a bottle that Krasinski struck with its novelty approach, and tacking on a sequel would've lost the luster. I was so wrong, and very glad to be.

Although we'll possibly always be short of getting answers to unnecessary questions regarding the mechanics of survival (like how you poop without the creatures hearing), a slightly larger exploration of the area made for a good second chapter in the continuing story. This really gave a Last of Us kind of vibe to it keeping that in mind, and it seems it doesn't just work for video games. Murphy was a great casting addition as well.

Never saw any trailers or TV spots, and I'm really glad that I didn't. The opening caught me off-guard, certain moments weren't ever anticipated to happen, and I think this was incredibly effective filmmaking that pushed the PG-13 rating limits when it could. The audience really respected the film's elements and were overjoyed being in the theater.

- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), the beginning of German Expressionism. This movie is 100 years old but has an incredible production design. If Tim Burton didn't watch this a thousand times, then I don't know.

- My GF's turn to choose: The Cabin in the Woods (2012), the trailer sent me one way and when I watched it I was blown away. A great homage to the horror genre. The third act is a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

- I finally watched Game of Death (1978), probably Bruce Lee's biggest after his passing. It pains me to say it is not good. The story is pretty standard and the editing decisions to make us think "That's Bruce!" are terrible. At least this film has that influential yellow suit and a pretty good fight with Kareem.

- My time to choose: my GF finally saw Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) and she was laughing non stop. I watched it 4-5 times already and never disappoints.

- And last night, Ronin (1998) one of John Frankenheimer's last movies. Great performance by De Niro and features some of the best chase scenes ever, right there with The French Connection or Bullitt.

Glad to hear Quiet Place 2 is great from multiple people. That’s definitely a theater movie. Can’t wait till theaters are open here, I miss imax and Dolby atmos theaters. A new Dolby laser place opened before the pandemic and want to check that out too.

Luckily all the theaters are owned by massive mall companies so they won’t die

Watched Annihilation on demand over the weekend. I'm not really sure what I think of it, specifically the ending at the lighthouse. I'm probably going to need to watch it again.

I don't remember the last time I saw the first rocky before this. I had forgotten just how abruptly it ends.

It still holds up well, minus a particularly awkward scene in Rocky's apartment.

The Lethal Weapon movies are back on HBO Max, so I binged the first two last night. Have seen them many times, Beverly Hills Cop levels but during this rewatch it struck me how dark they both are. Sure Shane Black puts in a lot of his trademark humor, but the plot lines are anything but.

The Conjuring 3. I give it a 8 out of 10. Pretty good movie, it was sort of different then the standard movies in this series. The ending was good and unexpected.

Beverly Hills Cop
I figured we would stick with the whole cop dramedy thing from Rush Hour. I certainly like Axel's character more. He's goofy in a way that isn't deprecating to his position or make you continuously wonder how he got the job. This is probably the straightest role I've ever seen Eddie in and because of that Reinhold's Billy really pushes the movie to a level worth watching again. The action scenes are horribly dated and more akin to an A Team shootout considering how terrible those goons shoot. Meanwhile, Billy is a cold blooded crack shot. Overall a fun watch and Eddie's charisma really makes what should have been a mediocre film into a really enjoyable and entertaining movie.

Next stop is 2 and then on to Lethal Weapon.

The Conjuring 3 - 5/10

I am a huge fan of the first and second films and this one was a swing and a miss. Felt like they went through the motions as I had no care for the actual story. It is a different feel from the first two....as it takes place in 1981 and is more of a murder story weaved with the supernatural vs a haunting.

I prefer the first two far more and they were also a lot more scary. This movie depended on pure jump scares instead of atmosphere.

James Wan did not direct it and it was obvious.
