I'm really excited to see the film.
In my head, Keaton's role would go to Stephen Lang from Avatar and Don't Breathe.

I loved the book series as well and couldn't wait for this movie to come out hoping it would be the start of a handful to come. I did enjoy it and thought the kid from Maze Runner did a pretty good job playing Mitch Rapp. Keaton was good because he's just a good actor but yes I think they needed more of a bad *** and Stephen Lang would have fit the bill perfectly. Still hoping for a sequel.

Finally saw Watchmen for the first time. I loved it, especially for not having read the graphic novel.

Now I can better follow along with the Doomsday Clock comic event. And I also want to get the graphic novel.

        Belko Experiment

I liked it a lot. They didn’t go over the top with the kills and it felt like what would happen in real life if one was in that situation.

        Gifted

Really loved this movie. About a little girl who is a genius mathematician and Her relationship with her uncle played by Chris Evans and goes through a struggle of how she should be raised.

The little girl is an amazing actress, she outshined Evans by a lot.

Gifted was great. That little girl is gonna be a star it seems. Funny thing is she plays the daughter of Keefer Sutherland on the show Designated Survivor and barely has any lines. So when I was watching this I kept thinking I know this girl from something. When I finally figured it out Man was I suprised how well she did and the back and forth between her and Evans was great. Totally recommend.

Another awesome young actor is Jacob Tremblay. Saw Wonder a few weeks ago and recommend that.

It’s an underdog story of a kid who was born with a deformed face that went through a bunch of surgeries and will be attending public school after years of home schooling by his mom played by Julia Roberts and Dad played by Owen Wilson.

What was different was they showed a number of different perspectives of the people in his life and it was done really well. A couple things rushed but not a big deal and every actor performed well. Very touching story I think it’s a movie every child should watch.

            Colossal

Probably won’t see another movie like this. Can’t go into it too much without spoiling it but if you want to watch something unique give it a shot. Stars Anne Hathaway and Jason Sedakis.

I enjoyed it, especially not knowing anything about the movie.

            Great Wall

Too bad this movie flopped I thought it was pretty good and a ton awesome visuals. Made sense why a why Matt Damon was there after watching it and it didn’t deserve the backlash it got.

There was a lot cool stunts and the Chinese army was awesome, loved how the army was setup and the formations they used.

I've honestly seen quite a few movies recently that I haven't written about (including a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies, ugh). Maybe I'll get around to writing about some of them. I will just give a shout out to Logan Lucky and Good Time, though.

That being said, here's a link where you can submit shortlist nomination entries for Empire Awards 2018.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Brain Donors (1992) This was a movie backed by the famous Zucker Brothers of Airplane! fame and written by Pat Proft of Police Academy and the Naked Gun movies. The Zuckers pulled out midway through production and Paramount cancelled their plans to really promote the film with a big splashy ad campaign which is a shame because it's HILARIOUS! Basically it's a modern take on the Marx Brothers with a heaping helping of Three Stooges sensibilities. John Turturro is in the Groucho Marx role and he totally nails it. The only thing he's missing is the Groucho mustache! This movie has accrued a bit of a cult following in recent years and I think it's a fantastic comedy. You should check it out if you can find it.

The Shadow (1994) Before I talk about what I think of the movie I have to say that The Shadow is perfect for a grimdark movie adaptation these days. He's not exactly a heroic figure in fact, quite the contrary as his origin is a villainous one and the usage of powers can very easily suck him back into the dark side. That being said, this movie doesn't quite take that tact but you could tell everyone involved had a love and respect for the material. I loved the stylish use of the camera and the pulpy noir settings. Yes, there are times where the backgrounds look a bit fake but overall it captured the mood well.

The problem is, the movie had a tonal issue. While I have no problems with some humor in places there are times where the humor comes in at just the worst times. There's a scene where a guy is controlled by the villain of the film and flings himself off the Empire State Building. You see the guy falling ot his death from the ground level as the camera pans down to Lamont Cranston and Margot Lane crossing the street, pausing while they're talking about what to do next and a motorist is yelling at them to get across the street. It's bits of humor in moments like that that hurt the film. Another issue was Penelope Ann Miller as Margot Lane. I felt she was miscast. She's a bit too light for the role as it needed someone a little more tougher a la Margo Kidder in the Superman movies. On the positive side, Alec Baldwin did a bang up job in the role of Cranston/The Shadow and he portrayed the right amount of menace as The Shadow without being hammy.

In the end, this is a pretty good film and definitely not as bad as some of the glut of '90s superhero/other media inspired films of the time. Again, I think the character would be perfect for a grittier update. (though keeping it in the '30s time period)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) I haven't seen the latest SW movie but I finally got around to seeing this and I LOVED IT! I came into it with the cynic's view that this is Disney just looking to milk the cash cow but this was actually very well done world building and contextualization for what would happen in Episode IV. The main takeaway for me was how much this felt like a traditional war movie rather than the fantasy/adventure bent of the rest of the Star Wars movie canon. The characters are all well defined and you really come to care for them all. I especially loved the story arc of the blind Asian guy who truly believed he had the Force within him. The humor in the movie was well placed particularly in the character of K-2SO. His death had deep impact with me emotionally. In fact, the decision to make this a heroic sacrifice on the part of the characters was a wise one and exemplifies the notion that war is never easy or always has a happy ending.

One last thing, I've got to give a tip of the cap to the entire production crew. This movie FELT like something out of the Original Trilogy from the look of the technology to the way the landscapes of the planets and moons. Yes, there is some modern filming sensibilities but everything else screams classic Star Wars and it totally takes Lucas to the woodshed in terms of looking modern but retaining the look of the technology from that time period both in the filming of the original films and the era within the Star Wars timeline. This was a fantastic film and shows you can make something Star Wars without all the fantastical elements and light sabers.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Watched a bunch of stuff over my holiday break, John Wick 2, Wonder Woman, Man of Steel, Doctor Strange, The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Amazing Spider-Man 1, and Spider-man Homecoming.

                    John Wick is flawless.

I saw Wonder Woman in theaters and liked it, but something about seeing it this second time just drove it home so much more for me. It would probably be in my top 10 superhero movies. The action is great to watch and well directed, not shaky cam nonsense. Diana is really genuine and well acted, the scene with her in No Man's Land was just epic. All of this made me so upset when I went to re-watch Man of Steel. He just had his best outing in Justice League, so I wanted to see if I'd feel better about Man of Steel now (I hated it when it came out, one of my most hated movies of all time). The Krypton stuff still sucks, I thought this was inevitable at first, but having now seen them pull off something equally as difficult in Themsycira, it just stands out even more. Cavill is great as Superman though, and I felt a little better about him at least. One of the complaints I see all the time about the movie is he isn't Super enough, like helping people, but they had the scene where he saves the bus as a kid, I can't remember exactly what it is but there was a scene where he goes out of his way while fighting Zod to save someone. And that score...incredible. Honestly the music alone almost saves it. Superman has the best theme music.

Doctor Strange was as impressive visually on blu-ray as I remembered in theaters. Awesome effects, I'm still thinking about the way they kept shifting the rooms they were in to change the battle, really creative stuff from marvel.

Rogue One is a beauty. I can't say enough about that final scene. There's just a real sense of terror that I don't think has ever been captured in Star Wars before. It sold the character perfectly, you can just feel the rebels fear.

The Force Awakens I like but I am not as high as others, the way it apes A New Hope is just a little too blatant for me. Also having seen The Last Jedi, I wish JJ had kept going. He's always been great at setups and terrible at finishing them, this time he set up the trilogy, and now he's escaped and left the bag in someone else's hands lol, I hate it.

The most surprising to me was Amazing Spider-Man. I've seen both 1 and 2 once before, but I dunno. I really enjoyed it a lot more than I did the first time. It is clearly above Tobey 1 and 3, Amazing 2, and on the top tier with Tobey 2 and Homecoming. Garfield was doing a great job acting, and Peter and Gwen's relationship and chemistry was great (not hard to believe given they were dating in real life), but I guess people felt like he wasn't really playing the Peter Parker they expected...I can kinda see that. I didn't necessarily feel that way, somber as Peter, and he was great as Spider-Man. I didn't have an issue with the skateboarding, and really loved the scene where he's skating in the warehouse and practicing swinging on the iron chains.

I know we all know how he got his powers and people were happy to skip the origin in Homecoming, but this movie made me miss it. There's just something about Spider-Man, maybe it's because he's a younger hero, I just feel like I need that montage of him ****ing around and finally starting to understand it. It does so much for his character. You could see in Amazing Spider-Man the transition of how getting the powers made him change from introverted teenager to someone who believed he could make a difference. I also can't believe they got Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and then didn't let him say the line. Sacrilege.

Just watched this tonight with the wife. I knew after seeing the previews I'd enjoy this but damn this was a great political thriller. Had enough action but wasn't over done at all and the fighting was much more realistic compared to most Jackie Chan movies. Chan and Brosnon both killed it in their respective roles. But Chan as the broken man after losing everything........damn. He nailed it. This movie rocked. Recommend to everyone.

Wind River, which is the third of the Neo-Western trilogy from Taylor Sheridan (along with Hell or High Water, and Sicario).

As per the other two films in this great trilogy, amazing writing, cinematography, acting and direction and a sold story. This is the most grim of the three, but Jeremy Renner delivers a splendid performance in particular.

I think my favorite of the three is Hell or High Water, as Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine were just amazing, with Sicario a close second. But Wind River is also excellent though a bit tougher to watch due to the subject matter.

That was the most fun I've had at the movies in some time. Extremely well done and not a wasted frame...and very funny while still having some touching moments as well as epic moments. Tough balance to strike but this director and writing team hit this one out of the park IMO.

I saw this a couple of days after Thor. I actually enjoyed it, though I question a couple of sequences and some of the pacing issues. However there were some amazing moments as well with Rey and Kylo especially and also with the slow burn of the retreating fleet.

Overall a good story and I'd like to see it again (on blu ray) but if you were going to say "let's go to a movie" to me right now, I'd want to go see Thor one more time.

John Wick 2. If you’re ever up for a mindless action flick, this one is not bad.
