Sweeney: Realistic graphics 10-15 years away from us

Gamasutra had an interview with Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney, one of the things they talked about is how long it will take for games to arrive that will look 100 percent realistic like a movie. We've come a long way in the last fifteen years since Doom was released, and Sweeney predicts it will probably take another 10-15 years until game developers are able to create games with graphics that can't be distinguished from reality.

NBA - Knicks, NHL - NY Rangers,

Yeah I would say so. Look at how far they came in the last 20 years.

The possibilities of CGI scare me a bit. If we ever do achieve truly realistic CGI indistinguishable from reality, then we will never truly be able to believe anything we ever seen on TV again as it could be a fake. And it would open up all kinds of possibilities for propoganda.

I was thinking the same thing.

The idea is exciting, but a bit frightening.

I read a study where the determined that when the videogame characters got "too lifelike" they were a turnoff to the player / human...

They decided that there was a "sweet spot" where the character looked, emoted and moved like a human, but was distinguisable from RL...

Wish I could find it, it was very interesting...

Of course, in 10-15 years, those tastes will probably become outdated by the audience on the way up, who might prefer things look the way Sweeny predicts...

I'm good with "The Show" level of things, but I'm not close to the target demographic...

LOL. I have never seen a teenager live in so much fear.

I don't know if I'd like actual real life looking graphics, just doesn't seem right being in a video game. Although, I'd still probably buy it...

How are they going to promote it though? People will just tell them they are just showing real life video
