Re: Is it me or ....

I meet a fair amount of young musicians (late teens into late twenties) and am always surprised that their "era of choice" is either pop from the 60's or rock from the 70's...

The only things I still play form the 90's are Biggie, Dre, Beastie Boys, Lusicious Jackson...that sort of thing...

Normally I would say nostalgia but I'd have to agree on Rap. Mainstream rap was better IMO then compared to now.

                  Agreed.

I even think that cartoons in the 80's were worse than those prior to the 80's. I loved cartoons like Looney Tunes and Popeye. I was watching reruns then and didn't even know it. The 80's had a lot of high flying, super powered action in their cartoons. Today, it's about being interactive with the kids.

But prior to the 80's the cartoons were pure comedy and enjoyment with interesting stories.

Exactly. It's easy to remember the great stuff from the past.

                      I will say this.

Illmatic? Ready to Die? The first Weezer album? Nirvana's Unplugged album? Superunknown? Dookie? A bunch of other currently esteemed albums?

                      No.

The 90s had a lot of great music. The most popular music blew.

Yeah I definately agree with you. To a certain extent I blame Biggie. He was so talented in the sense that he could tell a story, make a thoughful song, just rip a verse, and glamorize the lifestyle that it made other rappers follow suit. Then they ran with it and mainstream got carried away.

The 90's had it's rock that went mainstream because it was good music, unlike today where i could pick up and acoustic guitar and sing a half *** written song (see that "Lucky" song.). Look at what the 90's had to offer dude....cant argue with it.

Personally, I would whittle that list down to about half (Offspring, Audioslave?, and Marcy Playground at least) or if you're gonna pick and chose the "best" of the 90s, you need to throw in some of the more popular bands to give it some context. I was gonna mention Ace of Base, but Cebby already made that point. There are times when the mainstream music is actually good music, but its because the bands are already established and/or part of a bigger movement that can generate piles of cash - that's what grunge was.

Plus, its easier to argue that 50s/60s/70s/80s/ and now the 90s music was a lot better today because people tend to forget about the ****ty popular bands that were actually getting played back in the day.

Most of my favorite music comes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. There are exceptions, of course, but most of my favorite songs are pretty old. And it's not nostalgia because I wasn't alive in either of those three decades.

I agree. And the 90s cartoons don't stack up to classics like Tom and Jerry, Looney Toons, or Road Runner.
