Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

Agree with both of you. He has gotten alot better but his monologues can be so akward and weird. But I love a lot of the skits he does with his guests and he is a good interviewer. Plus The Roots are just boss.Word. His Neil Young "Pant's on the ground" bit was funny as hell-

His monologues are still a bit awkward though.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

Leno is god awful. Haven't watched Conan that much the past months and my comments were based off of this episode
(I'm one of the many new people tunign in this week to see what he'll say). I did watch/like him every night back around 2 years ago.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

Exactly. Leno's ratings were just as bad before his show turned around based off of the Hugh Grant "What were you thinking?" Hooker interview in '95. NBC should have given conan more time, but at the same time I still feel like he is at least somewhat responsible as it is a business of sorts. Noone is guarenteed anything. He is also responsible for not getting a better lawyer, as if it were me I would quantify the Tonight show in my contract as something that is on from 11:35-12:35. Conan didn't, and because of that thery can offer him a 12 o clock 30 minute tonight show and not have to pay him his 40 million.Exactly. That ending was a farewell to Conan. Anything else would have sold him short.

I would like to know how long Leno had to figure out his niche at Tonight Show. To adjust to something that he obviously wanted so badly takes time. I agree with you, though, that NBC is the real enemy here. But I have a feeling that Leno didn't help.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

The final segment was truly a nuke the fridge moment.

What a terrible way to go out after a classy performance by Neil Young. While I always want MORE COWBELL and it was cool to see Harper, ZZ, and Beck join in, Conan was better off being in the spotlight in the final segment instead of giving it to Ferrell.

Also how in the world could you not have Triumph The Insult Comic Dog on the last show?

I like Conan but he's a big reason why the Tonight Show bombed. He removed the edge from his program and played it safe. Hey this reminds me of Leno .....Comment

Get that **** out of here, dude. You clearly aren't on the same page as everyone else.

Oh, nevermind. I see that you really don't have any idea what you're talking about. Are you honestly going to try to base your opinion of Conan on one show that wasn't meant to be funny? Give me a break, dude.

It's a farewell song. They always played it at the end of dances at my school. Always. I think Conan probably wanted to go out to that.

Also, I didn't know he could play guitar.

If it makes you feel any better, Weinberg and company played something from the White Stripes. I forget what it was.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

I think Conan's only crime in this was that he wasn't willing to completely and totally change his style to accommodate the Leno crowd. Granted he got rid of some characters, but the show definitely had a completely different feel from when Leno was host.

It also doesn't help that instead of being on after The Colbert Report he was now on during it. I would imagine those two shows fought for viewers.

Comedy gold. In fact, that strike was Conan at his best. There is no way Leno's show could be half that entertaining without writers.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

Haven't watched Conan but from what I can gather his show has been neutered a little bit and all the great edgy stuff I used to love at 12 (masturbating bear, Triumph, Horny Manatee, etc) doesn't exist. His ratings reflect the fact that a certain kind of audience is still up at 11ish and for whatever reason he hasn't appealed to them the past half year. Conan is a great guy, but he is responsible for having a bad lawyer and for not delivering a show that got good ratings. If he had a better lawyer, he would still be on tv. And yes, hes played guitar on his show for years (the goodnight children segments) and the song was seven nation army. I also liked hearing Lovely Rita right before Hanks came out.Get that **** out of here, dude. You clearly aren't on the same page as everyone else.

what i miss from the old late night isn't so much his "characters" but when he goes out and films on location and does comedy bits... remember the "Old Time Baseball" skit, or what about him going out during the NYC transit strike, or the time he went to Montreal? Those were comedy gold.Comment

What I find funny is how so many of you guys are calling Conan classy for not taking parting shots but pretty much rejoiced anytime he threw any comedy mud the past couple of weeks.

Come on with this stuff man... the dude will be back on the air soon.Comment

It takes a long time to work into it...he still looks a little stiff to me during the opening monologue though.

Remember on Conan's 10th Anniv. Even Mr. T agreed it took him 3 years to get funny after he gave him a gold chain with a 7 on it.

Conan's a funny guy...I just don't think the grandma's that love Leno like his style of comedy.- The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.Comment
