    Re: Favorite Guitar Solos

Dimebag's Floods solo was ridiculous. I highly recommend that all metal fans take a listen to Michael and Chris Ammot's work. They are the brothers from Arch Enemy.

I should probably mention the solo from Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters".

This is In Flames, but Chris Ammot does a guest solo here. I think he only does the second solo.

That's my favorite ever as well. When the music fades out at the end and all you hear is the guitar melody over the sound of a thunderstorm you can just picture Darrell sitting on his front porch on a milk crate or something just playing for himself and the rain. It is truly remarkable.

And I hate to see Tom Morello on any of these lists because that guy just flat out sucks. Sorry, I had to say it!

I definitely don't like Tom's style but I wouldn't say he sucks. He is definitely an effects whore, but it's produced some pretty cool results here and there. He's no Buckethead when it comes to being technically amazing and also having a mastery of many many effects, but people like his stuff and that is what it is all about..

A guy at work told me to check out a local guitar legend that was Danny Gatton since I'm into roots-rock/rockabilly. Pretty slick.

After being introduced to Buckethead... change my answer to anything by him.

The songs King James, Soothsayer, Jordan, and Nottingham Lace are some of the most epic solos/songs/anything I have ever heard. Unbelievable.

That's the main thing, take away that loser's effects pedals and he is no better than any other run of the mill rock guitarist.

                Re: Favorite Guitar Solos

Tom is a great player because of what he can do with a guitar, not how good he is. His "style" (of not having a set style) perfectly accents De La Rocha's lyrics.

Prime example is their cover of The Ghost of Tom Joad. I usually don't think that a cover is better than the original, but....

But that's his style and what makes him unique and immediately identifiable. Technical ability does not always make the guitarist a great one.

                      Are you kidding me?

You listen to RATM and you talk about his voice? Listen to what hes saying and hows he's saying it. He's naturally pissed off and he's not bsing you. His voice doesnt matter in that band, its all about the lyrics.

Now his voice has the best flow i've ever heard.

So it's all about saying the F word every other word to get your point across? No thanks. It was entertaining in the 9th grade when it came out but that band is just far too low below my maturity level fifteen years later.

Haha yeah, I was gonna say... I don't really remember him cursing that much. I'm not the biggest Zach fan in the world, but he's talented and a smart guy. This video was cool... shows a different side of him and shows that he can sing well also, which was a surprise to me since all we normally hear is his trademark high-pitched screamy rapping:

                            <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zKdDVsp_NXc&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e 9e00"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zKdDVsp_NXc&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e 9e00" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Heh, and I REALLY don't think RATM or its individual members are immature in any way:

Zach is definitely a smart dude. I didn't know he could sing that well, but I tune out most singers anyway, so it makes no difference to me.

Back on topic, I think Morello is a little more technically skilled than he shows with his gimmicks. He doesn't even sniff my favs though, because it's not my cup of tea.

Also on topic, I like Shuggie Otis a lot. I forgot the names of the songs, but I used to listen to a CD of his that I had all the time.

Yeah, he's a good guitarist. You can hear some more traditional solos and less effect-heavy noodling on his new album with Boots Riley from The Coup -- The Street Sweeper Social Club. Most of the album is on Myspace... they've been touring around and performing on Kimmel and whatnot.

He's not even close to my favorite guitarists list, but he's not the one-trick pony that his Rage days painted him as... beyond making catchy and powerful riffs, he's a good technical guitarist as well as being creative with all the crazy noises/effect stuff.
