Re: Shutter Island
SpoilerHe did accept who he was finally. The ruse worked, but once accepting his reality he decided not to want to deal with what he came to finally understand, so he faked relapse to have that part of his memory and self removed from him forever. That is why when he says "is it better to live as a monster or die a good man" or something like that, the guy who faked being his partner says "teddy?" as if he is questioning who he is really dealing with. He was not crazy at the end, he just did not want to face the reality of his loss and the reason for it. That's what I got.Comment

Re: Shutter Island
SpoilerThey weren't roleplaying with him for three years. They only roleplayed with him this ONE time as an end all be all to see if they could finally snap him out of it. The boat was just part of the illusion. They even said they can snap him out of it for a bit, but he goes back into it - so they went for this "giant roleplay extravaganza."Spoiler
Yes and it was quite elaborate. Alot made sense toward the end like how the other guy struggled to get his gun out the holster when they first entered the compound and were met by the facility guards - little details like that are always cool. However, the woman hiding out in the cliff-side cave pretending to be the real escapee was a tad much as part of roleplay.Comment

Everything that happens in the three days on the Island has already been told to the doctors word-for-word.
Anyway, I finished the book and loved it. The twist was obvious to me but there are other important story elements that I did not pick up on.
I'm interested in seeing the movie because...
Spoilerof the anagrams. I really want to see how the movie shows this. The book does an amazing job of hitting you in the face with it. I picked up on Teddy being crazy just from one trailer viewing. I picked up on everything being roleplay when Cawley mentions that Rachel pretended that the ward was her home and the patients were neighbors. Hit me right there that Teddy is the one doing that. But the anagrams, the fact that Teddy was Laeddis surprised me, that is until the book shows all of the names in one page and Cawley asks Teddy to read them. It was brilliantly done in print, but the film can't really give you that same effect. Or maybe it did? I'm hoping to watch this sometime this week."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Shutter Island
I don't mind. I'm mostly going to watch to see how it was shot. To see how the book was adapted for film.
There is nothing that can be said to me now that I finished the book that would ruin the film."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Spoiler
If I remember right, they write all of the names on an easel and the psychiatrist asks if he notices anything about the names, waits a few seconds, and then explains everything to you.

Re: Shutter Island
This is how it's done in the book too. I'm mostly interested in how the audience sees it. Is it in your face or just there? Well, I'll find out soon."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Shutter Island
Just finished watching this movie. Not exactly my type of movie but I liked it.
The twist I pretty much expected, aside from the fact that:
SpoilerTeddy was actually Laeddis.
For some reason though, and I know I'm probably wrong, but I keep thinking that Teddy wasn't crazy and was really Teddy. Because right when he goes into the lighthouse, that's when the smokes, the drinks, the food, all that stuff that the girl in the cave told him would poison him, took effect. This way they could convince him he was Laeddis, his wife killed 3 kids that were supposed to be theirs, his partner was really his psychiatrist and the whole thing was just a big role play to snap him out of his craziness.
And also the same goes for his partner, Chuck. He disappears, which at the end I figured it meant that they captured him, the drugs took over and he was convinced into believing he was Andrew Laeddis' psychiatrist.
Finally, at the end with the "To live a monster or die a good man" line. I figured that meant that when he chose to go into the lighthouse, that was him choosing to live a monster because he wouldn't be getting off the island if he went there. But he could have died a good man if he just decided to escape instead of going to the lighthouse.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Its not too thin and not too thick. Spoiler
He never had any poison, and that shaking in his hands was due to his withdrawal from smoking cigarettes. His paranoia and craziness made him hallucinate that there was a woman in the caves and she tells him things which are plausible("his self defense mechanism are impressive" - german doctor)
His partner really was a doctor, the biggest clue for me being him struggling to take out his gun in the beginning and the rest of the real officers rolling their eyes at his attempt.
The final line was a reference to how in the past he would have breakthroughs, but then the whole cycle would start over again. So live as a monster(potentially go crazy again), or die as a good man(him knowing he went crazy sporadically, and not being insane at the time of death)Comment
