There was a group of 6 teenagers sitting on the benches by my apartment smoking last night. I opened my window and lit my blunt up and told them "this one's for The King of Pop!". One of them says "he was a weirdo, man". I told them they were too young and put the volume on the MJ up.

I do think as time goes on younger people will just forget about him altogether and the people who lived through his heyday will focus on the music and not the other BS. Very similar to Elvis in that regard.

most people will remember the freak show circus that he became over the past 15 years or so (especially the younger generation that dont remember the 70s or 80s Jackson)

but before his downward spiral, Michael Jackson produced some brilliant records and brilliant songs. He was the most successful artist of all time. It's impossible to forget the music, especially when you consider so many artists today were influenced by Jackson.

He'll be seen as a mixture of both. A brilliant performer who lead a messed up life.

Both. He was so ridiculously talented that you have to lead with that, but his personal life was so ridiculously bizarre it has to brought up. He will be remembered for both.

I agree. Even without the molestation charges he was a weird cat. He had Neverland, Bubbles, etc. I do think that over time people will remember the molestation charges less and just remember him as odd/weird, but there's no way you can remember him just for music. It wasn't just about his music, it was the whole "Michael" experience.

Yes his music was GREAT, but his side show antics are comparable to Dennis Rodman in terms of off-court/stage antics taking away from on-court/stage production.

Well the man's songs will always be recollected before any more really big references to him or long-winded documentaries (that will normally spell out his entire life including music, not just everything else). As generations go by, that personal stuff won't even be recalled by whomever has the fuel to add to the fire.

But his music will always be here. I don't know if he'll necessarily be remembered by it, but because only accused and never charged, he won't be remembered as a potential anything else before his music.

For me it's difficult, because I was born in 1990, when his prime was already over. All I grew up on was his controversial antics and one album that didn't really compare to the old ones. I got introduced to the musical genius Michael Jackson later in life, so it's impossible for me to not think about his personal life.

The older generation that was alive during his music career will obviously remember him for that, but those that never saw him perform will always consider him a creep.

Music for me because while he did go through his personal stuff, his music was just on a whole other level that no artist will never ascend to. Obviously some people have their preference in genres, but no artist will EVER have the universal appeal of Michael Jackson.

Simply answering "both" is like saying strawberry shakes are different than vanilla shakes.

Too easy an answer.

That it's an easy answer doesn't mean it isn't the right answer, at least for me anyway. I grew up listening to Michael and grew up watching him get weirder and weirder and weirder. I just really think they will both go hand in hand.

From the stories of him growing up under Joe, to the surgeries and other physical changes, to the stuff with the little boys, his life outside of the music really became just as big as the music itself.
