Re: Community
I really need to stop judging this show against what it used to be and just accept it for what it now is, which is far more conventional than the show used to be. I don't know, it's still funny(ish), but it's certainly not my favorite show on TV anymore.

Re: Community
That episode was definitely my least favorite of the three so far. It felt tonally off from the community of the first three seasons, (as Dayman said) it was more like a conventional sitcom than the community I've come to know and love. For example, I was amused by the Britta fire escape gag at the beginning, but Community, for all its absurdity, is not a show specializing in exaggerated slapstick. And for all the jokes that landed, like Pierce dumbing down the American Adaptation of Inspector Spacetime (I'm surprised there hasn't been an American Doctor Who yet), Annie's subplot was possibly the dumbest subplot in the show's history. It was completely meaningless and irrelevant, and it regressed Annie's character development to near season 1 levels.
As I've said before, I'm happy watching this version of Community (which feels more like a different show "featuring the characters of community" than actual Community itself) because it's still capable of being funny. Community is no longer, however, groundbreaking television that at times was the funniest show on TV, and that is sad.Comment

The whole time I was watching this it just felt off. The characters and dialogue were actually okay (Annie notwithstanding - seriously WTF was that?), but the story was a just a standard sitcom circle like the previous two episodes. The biggest culprit is that the tone is completely different and that's made apparent by the difference in production. If Community before was an 80s sitcom centered around a deep meta connection for its base its now been brought into the current. The tonality and production of the show is essentially the same as Suburgatory - its polished, clean, and sparkles with sexuality. It works for Suburgatory, but it just feels unnatural on Community. Whereas before it felt like the characters themselves had a baring on the happenings and developments of each story the past episode just felt like the characters were driven down into old schticks of themselves completely forgoing any kind of development that happened previously. As mentioned before this episode effectively felt like the cast and characters of Community guest-starring on another show.

Re: Community
I feel like each episode has been better than the last, while this isn't Community, I still watch with passion because I've grown to seriously love these guys. I hate how after the large amounts of subtext and will they/won't they, they started the season with Troy and Britta together and we never got to see how (Flashback episode!??)! That said, I enjoyed the Abed-Troy-Britta love triangle. While it's dumbed down compared to Harmon's love heptagon (as all the characters were connected in an intricate, incestuous, and unstable web), I still loved it.
Troy [sits, and smiles awkwardly]: Oh heyyy, there you guys are. This is so nice, just three friends, friending around, all unthreatened-like.
Toby: Terribly sorry, this is slightly embarrassing, I've seem to have forgotten your name
It's Troy! You know know it's Troy! Okay, it's the first part of Troy and Abed! Toby and Abed in the morning!? That's ridiculous! I'm not psycho!Last edited by Streets; 02-25-2013, 08:24 PM.Comment

Re: Community
It's like the AV Club is on a mission to **** on anything Community this season. I really enjoyed this week's episode. Like Dayman said, it finally felt like I was watching the same show as the first three seasons.
On a similar note, has there ever been a show that changed from the beginning to the end more than The Office? Watch a few episodes from the first three seasons, and then look at the characters now. Completely different. Like I'm all for character development and progression, but it's just poor writing at this point. I realize I'm not saying anything that people don't already know, but I had never realized how stark the difference really was.Kansas City Royals | FC Barcelona | New Orleans Pelicans
