As a homer vote, I'd give it to The Dark Knight.

But on a separate idea of "defining," there's no reason not to put United 93 in this topic of discussion.

Then The Dark Knight wins by a landslide.

With him settling on "The Shawshank Redemption." "Goodfellas" was in there too.

I don't think the '00's had a defining film. Right now, gun to my head, it's "The Dark Knight" but I would prefer to wait and see how it looks 5 years from now. I already think some luster has worn off of the LOTR trilogy and for most they definitely aren't re-watchable. The only knocks against "The Dark Knight" would be that it is a superhero flick, no matter how far the genre has come there will always be some stigma attached, and it's a Batman film where Batman is the weakest link. The only low points in the film are when Batman dominates the scene, and like Burton's Batman, its a film carried by its villain.

For those wondering, Simmons suggested "Almost Famous" initially, then changed his mind to "The Dark Knight."

That pretty much matches what my definition of "defining" is: a movie that everyone saw. During the 90s, I don't care who you are, you saw at least most, if not all, of those movies listed. Like that one Christmas when me and every kid I know got Wayne's World on DVD. That was a defining movie for kids our age - it defined us because we all saw it and could all relate to it. It connected us all.

As such, the only movies worthy of discussion under that definition of "defining" are the Dark Knight, the LOTR triology, and the Harry Potter movies.

I'm not sure they rank up there with Dark Knight, LOTR, and Harry Potter, but Shrek, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Gladiator have to be near the top of such a list.

If we are to include franchises, I think the Pixar movies deserve mention. Each one to get released this decade has been a huge success. That company can do no wrong. The Spider-Man movies would have deserved mention if the third one wasn't such a clunker, because the first two were big. Another cultural event type of film was "Revenge of the Sith" but again, that movie is tied to two others that were disappointments at best. This decade will also be tied to the influx of Apatow films as far as the comedy is concerned.

I guess I will go with TDK, but my heart really lies with Memento for films from this decade. I suppose that could be the defining cult film of the decade.

Would TDK be considered if it weren't for Heath Ledger and the unfortunate circumstance?

UP was #3 on the IMD list...really? Haven't seen it yet but is it that good?

Finally, as far as "Re-watchability" any Will Ferrell movie should be considered...for me

The 00's have flown by, Holy Cow.
