1984: Best Year for Movie Releases? Discuss

Thought it was a great read. Gotta say I agree...mainly b/c I'm a huge fan of the Karate Kid. 1984 had some classic movies.

You know overall that is a hella of a list for 1984.

I agree, maybe 1984 needs to be in the discussion more.

Agreed, Ghostbusters makes 1984 the best year, That could have been the only movie released and it still would be the best year for movies.

A UMD board decided 1989 was the best:

Personally, 2000 may have been top heavy, but Momento, Requiem for a Dream, Gladiator, and Snatch are a hell of a top four.

In terms of amazing one man performances, 2008 may be tops.

1994 also has a huge case. Forest Gump, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Leon the Professional, Usual Suspects, Lion King and others (that's just looking at top rated IMDB).

For TV, it's 2006, but I think that's another topic.

I would have busted the bank on movies for 84. Damn.

1984 is definitely the best year ever for the blockbuster era. I'm gonna guess there was another year before '75 that was as good or equal to it but i'm too lazy to look it up.

Just my opinion but '89 suffers from sequelitis...too many inferior follow ups.

1939 is widely considered hollywoods best year ever.

                        Money-wise, yes.

But that doesn't mean it was the best overall year for quality of movies.

Granted - that's coming from someone who thinks GwtW and WoZ are, easily, the two most overrated movies of all time (money-wise and "classic" wise).

I always considered 1994 to have the best list of movies for me personally to be released.

Not a bad list - but certainly not great. A lot of movies on the list that really aren't very good movies, but are fondly remembered for nostalgic (and other) reasons.

On the other hand, I guess movies don't necessarily have to be good, but popular for the list to make sense.

The 80s were definitely the best decade for movies, IMO. Just so many funny, classic movies were made then. Most of my favorite movies come from that decade.
