Where have I been? Music related

So Im in college, I am 28, lots of "kids" around me who were like 7 and 8 years old when I was in the military, in any case, there isnt this giant generation gap or anytning, they just know more about today stuff than I do and rightfully so.
Long story short, in color theory we had to do this rendering of color where you listen to music and use colored paper squares to emphesis the sound of the song using color.

we all had to bring in music. 2 people played these vintage sounding songs I have never heard before. I could tell they were new yet they sounded like they were classic rock type songs. Im like that sounds freaking awesome.

so I go searching for these songs and I never find them but I do come accross a group called Cage the Elephant on itunes. I listen to 1 song, buy the whole album, havent stopped listening yet, then Genius reccomends all these groups, the Black Keys, Raceonters, horehound. They all have this vintage 60's sould to them and im like this is the greatest day of my life holy crap. Its like i am finally home.

the issue has been sirius radio. For the past 4 years Ive had it and I listen to like 3 stations, none of which have any new rock.

when did this vintage sound hit and is it going to get better or is it going to fade away fast. these songs rock and I bet theres more out there i have yet to discover.

You've pretty much discovered my favorite genre of music today. If you liked the Raconteurs and The Dead Weather (whose album horehound you referenced) I suggest checking out Jack White's other band The White Stripes.

Yeah I hit up white stripes on Pandora. I see these artists in Alternative, is there a more in depth name for it though?

I wish there was, but as far as I know 'alternative' is the way they are categorized. Maybe someone else has some more insight.

The best way to discover more bands like this is to ask around, use pandora, or hear them in other mediums (movies, tv shows, etc.). The latter is how I've found alot of my favorite lesser known bands.

Now you have me going through the Alternative section of iTunes. I had heard the one Cage the Elephant song and loved it, but just now heard some of their other stuff and immediately bought the CD. Now I'm going through the samples from Monsters of Folk

And I just realized I had never heard any Kings of Leon aside from Use Somebody (which I didn't know was them until tonight). My iPod is gonna run out of room tonight

KOL has a great library of songs IMO, although their best work is most definitely their last 2 albums.

Another band whose stuff I love is Interpol, not quite sure if they would fit into the same category as KOL or Jack White's stuff, but they are definitely Alternative, and have a very unique sound. I guess in regards to KOL's lead singer and Interpol they are kinda similar. Different sounding singers but both pretty unique I'd check some of their stuff out.

Well the thing with me is I tend to like a wide spectrum of rock, and I definitely enjoy Southern Rock, so I definitely enjoy what I've heard from KOL's debut album too

Totally agree, one of my favorite things about KOL is how evident their progression of sound is from album to album. I love their earlier albums too. In fact When we went to see them live a few weeks ago while most of my friends were complaining they played to many old songs, I actually thought it was refreshing to see a band play alot of their older less well known songs. I enjoyed it alot and thought it made for a better show.

Horehound and Keep It Hid are my two favorite albums of the year. Both have a "vintage" sound to it as you describe above. Horehound is just an awesome listen all the way through.

Not sure what exactly sound you like, since all stuff mentioned has been pretty much modern garage blues-rock stuff, but the newest Black Crowes album is pretty slick. They've always had a good vintage, classic rock sound to them. The new album is definitely jamming, country-rock - awesome. Plus, this song is addicting:
                            <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/F1d0uImJKtU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/F1d0uImJKtU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Oh yeah, check out Black Motorcycle Club's Howl. Its superb.
