Hauppauage HD-PVR; good capture card?

How much can you guys vouch for this for capturing HD video from my television and transferring it to my laptop?

I'd really rather not waste near $300.

If you guys don't think this is best, what would you recommend?

If you don't mind the price tag, it's the perfect solution for capturing HD footage. I use it to capture video game videos and it serves me well.

The only complaint is that the video captured is in .TS or M2TS and not many edit softwares have support for it. Your best bet is to have a recent copy of Sony Vegas. Otherwise you would have to convert the videos before editing which takes approximately 7 times the video length.

I have Vegas Movie Studio 9.0, but what would that do? Even if I rendered it in another video format, it would still take just as long as converting it, wouldn't it? Or close to it

Vegas Pro can edit M2TS files natively. You wouldn't have to convert it at all. I would assume Movie Studio would have the same capability.

The Hauppauge device comes with software to convert them to WMV.

That capture HD Component, none. This and the BlackMagic card are the only HD capture devices I'm aware of. Others let you capture OTA signals but not inputs from other devices.

I've only tested it with the demo for Sony Vegas Pro but it certainly works for it and quite smoothly I might add. The M2TS format is a Sony proprietary format that they use in their video cameras so obviously they would support it with their software. I can't vouch for Sony Vegas Movie Studio (I confused Pro with Studio in my previous posts) but one would assume the two are built on the same basic code.

I can send you some video samples if you want to try it with your software.
