    Chicago Gets Eliminated FIRST

I guess I don't have to worry about my city raising taxes even more.

I don't think the olympic committee likes the U.S.A. all that much. Oh well, join the rest of the jealous haters in the entire world.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not but it's not like the US has had a dry run. They had the Summer Games in '96 then the Winter Games in 2002. You add in the fact that there's a Winter Games coming up in North America in 2010 and it makes perfect sense why the 2016 Summer games are off the continent.

Can you blame them? We walk around this planet thinking we own it. This planet doesn't just belong to one country. It belongs to all the nations of the world. Sometimes I feel that we as Americans think we are the only people on this Earth.

Part of me is actually glad that we didn't get the games. Now it'll wake us up and see how the world really views us. President Obama got a first hand view in Copenhagen on the amount of work he needs to do to repair our relationship with the rest of the world.

We've had the 1996 and 2002 Olympic Games. How many times do we need to have them? There are nearly 200 countries on this Earth. We are not the only nation.

Since the Olympics' inception in 1896, the US has hosted the games in:

            1904
            1932 (Summer and Winter Olympcs)
            1960
            1984
            1996
            2002

Vancouver, BC holds the Winter Olympics in 2010, so just take a short trip over the U.S. Canadian border if you're simmering for some Olympic action.

South America has never hosted the Olympics, so let them have it. Maybe have it in Johannesburg in 2020 to give Africa its first Olympics.

Besides, the games result in a net loss of income, anyways, and the expense would outweigh the money brought in for Chicago.

What a great post and I agree with it. I kinda think the whole Obama and Oprah in Copenhagen thing might've had the opposite effect then was intended to be honest with you.

I think a lot of it is due to older people having that "swagger" due to WWII and being all high/mighty cause the US was the savior, along with it being primarily the US vs. Russia in the cold war, just gave people the feeling that if the US wasn't stopping bad people then the rest of the world wouldn't be able to handle it themselves.

I agree with some of what you posted but I have serious doubts that us not getting the olympics will somehow lead to people waking up and seeing how the world views us. This will be merely a blip on the radar for most so I doubt it changes anyones opinion on much of anything.

The only issue I have is that it was the first choice eliminated.

                        Re: Chicago Gets Eliminated FIRST

The financial value of having the Olympics in your city is a mix bag. I know Montreal lost a ton of money when they had it but I believe Greece did pretty well when they had it in 2004.

Now of course money spent towards the Olympics is better off for building more hospitals, retaining doctors, helping the poor, etc.... but these things do little to bring in more tourism dollars. It's just the cold hard reality.

The Winter Olympics are only a few months away and we have already gone way over budget (this happens to pretty much every city). Despite this happening, I'm a huge supporter. Vancouver is already a premier international city but I think the Olympics will even further raise the profile.

I'm not surprised the IOC didn't pick Chicago. The last 2 Olympics in the US weren't a smashing success and North America already has the Olympics next year.

Well said. We should totally apologize to the rest of the world, including all its woefully corrupt dictators and the feckless (and also corrupt) United Nations, for being such an awesome country that is the envy of the entire world and its global supercop. I was waiting to see how Obama being completely embarrassed and pimp-slapped by the IOC would be spun, and I should have been prepared for the following:

"Our standing in the world was so damaged by the past eight years, not even all the hope and change and unicorns and magical pixie dust in the world plus Oprah could overcome it. We have a lot of work to do, folks. Get out there and start apologizing."

I could say something about this but I have to bite my tongue.

Look, no one is saying the US has to apologize for its standing in the world but a little humility once in a while is not a bad thing.
