Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?

Got a new laptop for work with W7, I love it so far. Very modern and "Mac"ish feel to it.

At work we're a MS business partner so we have unlimited upgrades so we can add W7 to all our workstations, definitely something I'll be doing over the next couple months.

I've been using windows 7 for a little over a month. It's great. It's much faster and simpler than vista. It fixed every issue and driver problems vista had.

If there are any students here and if you have vista you can upgrade to Windows 7 for only 30 dollars. (Deal ends in early January though)

Also what does it mean when you guys say install it "Clean"?

Rather than upgrading and keeping your documents, settings, etc, it removes everything and puts Windows 7 on a "clean" computer

I am assuming you have that option when you start to install? So basically when I upgrade I need to put all of my documents/programs on a disc and then clean install it.

If you're upgrading from Vista then you'll be fine, if you're upgrading from XP then you have to do a clean install.

Is there anyway to check how many programs will stop working? I assume things like Microsoft office and Norton will work and things like Photoshop CS3 will stop..

I installed it on one my wifes PC (I am a mac lover) and I think it is the best windows to date. Pretty slick interface and 100x better than Vista.

With the package my company got from MS we got a compatibility analyzer that you run and it lets you know what programs won't work with W7, pretty slick.

Sounds like you are going from XP? You can save all of your documents, but you will have to reinstall your programs from their original disks (or redownload the installers off the web).

If you don't want to do all that, a program called LapLink PC Mover is also an option... they have a version of the software that retains all of your programs and files for a move from XP to 7. I used that and it worked wonderfully.

I have Vista right now..but I honestly wouldn't mind starting fresh and doing a clean install.

I think it's like $28. It was on sale for half price the week before Windows 7 actually released, that's when I got it.

EDIT: Looks like it is $19.95 for a limited time. http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/pcmov...assistant.html

Ahh, well if you have Vista, you can upgrade in place without having to reinstall everything, as long as you go from and to the correct version. Here's a handy chart:

But yeah, a clean install is still the best route to take if you are willing to do that.

So if I have Vista, and upgrade to Windows 7, I should be good right? Will I have to back my stuff up?
