Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
Why not do the Windows 7 64-bit?
I'm finishing up backing up my stuff and then i'm going to go to Win 7 64-bit either this weekend or next.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
You can though, read back about 10 posts, I posted how to do it. As for whether you need to or not, first of all what sort of a processor and how much RAM do you run? Here are the benefits of Windows 64 bit over the 32 bit edition:
Pros and Cons of a 64 bit system:
You can address much more than 4GB of memory, which is ideal for avid gamers, CAD, video editors and heavy multi-taskers. However, any 32 bit software you use will still be restricted to 4GB memory – you need a 64 bit CPU, OS and applications to take full advantage of the extra RAM.
16 bit applications will no longer run. Although this is unlikely to be a problem, if you use very old software (from the Windows 3.1 days!) then it will not work under a 64 bit OS.
Existing 32 bit drivers no longer work.If you have older or poorly supported hardware you may find that it can no longer be used. Got a 7 year old scanner that just about works in Vista? You may not be able to get it working in 64 bit Windows 7.
Unsigned kernel-mode drivers no longer work. Along with the issue above, the inability to run unsigned kernel mode drivers will cause problems for old hardware. (There is reportedly a way to bypass this check).
Running some 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS could actually be slower. The additional overheads in running 32 bit software in 64 bit mode could cause a slight degradation in performance. It will take some time for 64 bit software to become the norm.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
Bottom line - if you have the hardware to run it then save yourself the hassle and upgrade to the 64bit, because it is the future and eventually you will have to anyways.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

None of those things really pertain to me above, and I already upgraded to 32 and I am liking it so far.Comment

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
I had the RC build in 64 bit and had some programs that had graphical errors and various issues, but worked fine on the 32 bit version.
Personally, I'd stick with the 32 bit version.
Although I'm using XP because I can't think of a single meaningful reason to use 7 over XP right now.Comment

So Kev - thoughts? Is it pretty easy to adapt to coming from Vista? What do you like and what do you hate?Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
I had some trouble with Spy Sweepers (The only program that kind of broke when I moved over) but Windows told me what to do. All I had to download was a program from webroot and now it works perfect.
Sleep Mode is great (Just as the commercial advertises.) I always use sleep mode when I walk away from my computer and it loads up extremely fast which is nice.
Plus what I like is when ads pop up they actually don't on Windows 7. They fly down to the task bar and you can X them out..Its kind of hard to explain but it is great.
The only thing I don't like it the actual look of the taskbar...It is too big for my liking, but I think I will just get used to it. It is much more sleek and I like have a picture for your applications opened instead of a long bar on your task bar.Comment

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
Finally took the plunge and upgraded from XP tonight. I cannot believe how quick, smooth and easy the process was.
I have a four year old Dell XPS 400, almost everything of relevance is on an external HD. I upgraded to 2x2GB RAM as well (little courtesy purchase from work hehe).
I backed up 5 GB of data from my C drive to the external drive, changed the boot process to read from the CD-ROM drive, formatted my PC (which took all of two minutes, I couldn't believe how fast it went) and then followed a few prompts and boom, I'm on W7."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
Yeah, windows 7 is what vista should have been. I've been using it for about 4 or 5 months now and I love it. It's fast and light on resources, but with all the latest features.
Everything just works. All the problems I had with vista have been eradicated. I couldn't ask for much more, i'm glad MS went back to basics.Comment

Re: Anyone upgrading to Windows 7?
I'm curious now. My HP runs pretty quick right now, but I'm wondering if going to 7 will make it faster still. I'm gonna wait until I see Service Pack 1, then I think I'm gonna take the plunge!Note to Tiburon Marketing:
