That's the thing... you won't have any idea.

You buy the phone, then someone comes out with this incredible app that you want... say a barcode reader via digital images... and it's 10 MB. But you're already at the limit.

You have to make ridiculous allowances.

I'm shocked Google would overlook something like that. They had such a "big hand" in this device... I can't imagine them not even thinking about that.

1. nearly all the apps come in at under 1mb
2. Google didn't put the ability to run apps off your SD themselves, but since Android is an open source platform it's already been done by the community.
3. The way the apps work on linux/android being able to put them on your SD card makes them very easy to pirate, so it wasn't an oversight on their part.

Having an iPhone, I already know the size of some apps that people will want on their device. 1mb isn't the average size, especially when they include a dedicated GPU and plan on marketing it as a gaming device.

If the community can find a way around it, fantastic. But your reasoning is poor. The end result is all that matters though. I'd be sure before investing all that money into the device however.

He is right. Unlike Apple the Google Android is open platform. I'm sure that amounts to something.

I have a g1 with access to the android market, I know what's available. Iphone apps aren't the same as Android ones, so I, unlike you, actualy know what I'm talking about.

I'm just curious how the large scale apps will work. They honestly can't expect apps to be super small and compete with the iphone apps. Do they just install small files on the phone's internal memory, then access other stored data off the SD cards?

It's also somewhat misleading to say files are quite small if they just download a 1MB file to the internal memory, but need a gig or more installed on a SD card.

Android is just another version of Linux, which is pretty streamlined to begin with, apps usually take up very little space and they're optimized during install to run as fast as possible. I think the largest app I have right now is a GPS app called co-pilot which takes about 35mb of space, then you store any map info on the SD card. I have a my apps on my SD since it's been figured out for the G1 already, and even when i had probably around 50-60 apps, it still came in at well under 100mb.
I'm 100% certain by the time this phone is out, apps2sd will be figured out, so the phone storage won't even be an issue. That's the great thing about Android, the devs are committed to helping people out, and since it's basically Linux, devs don't have to start completely from scratch to figure out how to do stuff. And even better is that Google supports it and applauds it.
I've even been running the Hero's version of Android on my G1 for the last few months, and it wasn't even "out" yet, so I'm sure people are already cooking things up for this phone.

iDon't have that problem. If you're seriously going to quote marketing speak, there's not much else to really discuss. People jailbreak their phone for a reason, and it's no different from the "open source" being mentioned here since the developers have access to pretty much anything.






Yeah... so let's not even try it. We're not comparing devices here, just discussing something that seemed to be an issue with it early on.

It won't be a standard or "supported" feature, because as I said already, once apps are on the SD all you have to do to pirate them is copy the .apk file off your card.

But Jail break totally disqualifies any warrenty you have. Not that Apple replaces a broken phone anyway. The thing ins Android allows it and its still "legal"... That's the whole point. I'm keeping my G1 but going Blackberry 9700 asap so this arguement won't be applicable for me in a few lol

Don't get me wrong the iPhone is fantastic. One OS, One Phone with many capabilities as opposed to android being spread so thin. Apple make sure it develops the phone to take full advantage. But with the iPhone not being on Tmobile I am a bit bitter. Therefore... "iDont take pictures in the Dark" lol

Again both are fantastic platforms. I can't wait til Apple is released from that exclusive contract though.

doesn't matter. YOu just restore it in iTunes. And if you want this Droid phone to run super smooth you have to install a custom rom. which voids the warranty too. Otherwise it is a little laggy.

These phones (Droid and HTC) look sweet and I would love to have one a few years ago. BUt until these companies realize that music is a BIG reason the iPhone does so well, they are going to keep falling short. Making a kick *** phone and putting a bare bones music player in it doesn't make sense to me. IF they ever add that in the future then I could consider one.

HTC biggest problem is they use Windows Mobile which is dated. I think the Droid will over take it eventually.


Looks like they have realized having some type of app store is a good idea. They also need big hard drives instead of mem cards. I think loading anything from a mem card is laggy and not near as fast as having a HD. I'm sure it's cheaper to make though with mem cards.
