Re: "Official MS Window 7 Chat"

for those with a valid .edu email address, you can get windows 7 home or professional (full or upgrade, i recommend full) for 34.99+local tax. I just called, and got a full professional version for $37.08 shipped to Baltimore.

Just call 1.877.696.7786 and press "7" then "1". Talk to a CSR, and boom, easy Windows 7. It'll begin shipping on the 22nd, so you probably won't get it for a couple days, but at that price, it's totally worth the wait.

Been using it for about a week, and I have only blue screened once!

Other than that, its much better on the eyes than XP. I skipped vista completely, and have been all mac for 3 years, so its nice to see MS deliver on some eye candy.

All around I like it. Its better than XP. I'm upgrading to 6GB RAM today to take advantage of the 64 bit OS.

Installed last night (yay MSDNAA!) and my first impression is that it's a great step forward.

I skipped Vista entirely (literally have about a minute of experience in it, trying to help my roommate find a program on his computer), and I've got to say that I think Microsoft did things right on this one. The upgrade was pretty painless going from XP, I used Laplink PCmover Upgrade Assistant to move all my files and programs from my XP install. It's sleek, it's efficient, I'm impressed.

I was toying with making the switch to Mac with my next computer, but I think Microsoft's won me over again with Windows 7.

W7 is very nice. All items I had that Vista would not recognize or install, works flawlessly with W7...
And yep it runs silky smooth...

Re: "Official MS Window 7 Chat"

Ok, I plan on installing it tonight. Couple questions though...am I going to lose all of my programs and whatnot? I read somewhere that I'll lose all that stuff. Do I need to do a clean install? I also read that the only way you can do an upgrade install is if you're going from like Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium. I'm running Vista Business and will be upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate.

I was also considering dual-booting just to be safe, but I really hate Vista and only have a 120 gb HDD on this computer and wouldn't really mind starting fresh.

Unless you are going from 32-bit to 64-bit or vice versa, it looks like you can do an in-place upgrade with no issues.

Re: "Official MS Window 7 Chat"

I just got done upgrading Vista Home Premium on my Laptop to Windows 7.

I was kind of skeptical of doing this, because even though Vista has given people issues, it never really gave me any problems.

Long story short, I'm glad I installed W7. The OS is just so smooth and it operates like butter. I thought my Latop was speedy before, but now it's like it's on crack.

                    I would recommend the upgrade.

Is it still better to do a fresh install and load all your stuff again from an external or something even if you CAN do a straight upgrade?

Yep... It always is better IMO because you start from scratch and don't have leftover DLL's and config files from the previous OS. While those files likely don't do any harm sitting around, I prefer the drive to be clean when installed.

Guys quick question........ Ive seen the comparisons of the editions, but what Im wondering is, is there anything in the homeedition that ISNT in professional? The reason I ask is the domain join in pro is important to be but I dont want to lose media center or other things that Home premium might have. Does anyone know?
