    This is a good point.

I wouldn't say she "easily dwarfs him", but he is still arguably not the biggest star in his house (Beyonce), in his genre (Eminem), or on his label (Kanye).

I dont think so. Beyonce doesnt even sell out arena tours across the country. She does well but even in a city like DC (where her music fits the demographic makeup of the city) you could still buy tickets to her last tour the day of. U2 is selling out stadiums this year touring with Muse which is far from a big name.

I like how the OP asks if he's the most popular artist in the world, and every time somebody proves the point wrong, a new rule is added to make whatever is said void.

MY Bad, Since Hov doesn't do or even attempted a stadium I cant say he could because it would be a opinion....

The one thing Jay Z does do is stay out of the press when it comes to his personal life compared to the majority of todays stars. We don't know nearly as much about Jay Z and Beyonce as we did about Britney and K-Fed or Madonna and A-Rod or Justin and whomever he is sleeping with.

For being as huge of stars as they are, Beyonce and Jay Z aren't nearly in the daily news as much as lesser accomplished stars are, which I appreciate, but it probably hurts their world wide status.
The rules at the beginning were that no bands be included, people didn't read that, and yes I should have said alive, ( but everyone knows that MJ was it) my bad.

If bands are not included, even though Bono could be seen as bigger than U2, I guess Madonna would be the biggest artist in the world. She has had much more of a following than Jay due to the length of her career. I just don't see how Jay is that big outside of the US, but I have never looked into it nor cared about it. I doubt there is an answer to this question. But Bono would be the answer if the rules were different.

Nothing against Jay-Z, he's very talented and very popular...just believe he's speaking to a smaller segment of the population compared to U2 and whatnot.
Conversely those same older rock groups dont reach the younger generation either... but I definately dont think Jay-z is the biggest world wide artist.... The Stones probably get that distinction

Ok lets end the discussion..Tina Turner ( if we go by concert size ) had 186,000 attend her Rio 88 concert, still a record to this day, So including bands Lets just say Hov is Top 10, with the likes of ( No order ) Madonna, Prince, Brittney, Aerosmith, Stones, U2, Beyonce, Tina Turner, Jay Z, McCartney...

Paul McCartney is the most popular living artist in the world and it probably isn't even close. Jay Z certainly isn't the most popular. I'd put Bono, Madonna, ect. above him.

Outside of the rap community, I'm not sure how popular Jay Z is. I doubt my parents even know who he is (and the same goes with a lot of 50+ aged people). I know who he is, but I couldn't name a single song of his.

More younger people listen to U2 and the Rolling Stones compared to old people listening to Jay-Z...

U2 more than the Stones, for sure, but I think they have some sort of reach to the younger audience with their new CD's.

A good question was raised, could Jay-Z fill up 70k stadiums on a tour? I dunno...when U2 was here last week, quite a few people around would be talking about it, some were going, etc. If Jay-Z had a concert I'm not sure anyone I know would be all atwitter about it (be it at work, the poker tourney I was at, tennis, etc).

I know I'm far from the target rap demographic, and probably the same with 95% of my co-workers...I just don't think Jay-Z has the reach, but that's just from my experience/observation.

Off Subject but could you imagine if McCartney Ringo and George Harrison's son and another Guitarist did a one off Beatles album now? It would sell 2-3 mill the first week. Why doesn't he do something like that?

No he's not THE most popular artist in the world but he is ONE OF. He did a concert in Baltimore last night and one of my friend's went and he said that there were quite a few empty seats in there and anybody from here knows that the First Mariner Arena is not that big at all. So yeaaaaaa...

I can't believe it took that long for Sir Paul to come up in this thread. THAT is the answer to your question. Jay Z probably isn't even top ten.

Thats strange because the concert was sold out. My friend tried to buy tickets yesterday and couldnt. He damn sure sold out Verizon Center last year when I was there..
