Best router bang for the buck?

I think it's time to upgrade. My Linksys has been relatively hassle free, but I don't think it's powerful enough. It's located in my basement and has to go up 2 floors to the master bedroom for a signal to reach our laptop and it's pretty faint. Interestingly, when I hooked up a 360 wirelessly (using the old Xbox1 adapter) that is only on the next floor, it appears to be full strength. I wasn't expecting that.

Any suggestions for model and type that wouldn't bust my wallet?

I would stay with Linksys. Cisco makes the best routers. Period. Just get the wireless G with Rangebooster (around 60 bucks).

Avoid Belkin like the plague. I bought a Belkin thanks to being tight on money and while it works just fine for my online gaming as my PS3 is wired but when downloading on my laptop, which is wireless, I basically cant do much else as the connection isnt strong enough. If I had the money I would upgrade but Im stuck at the moment.

LOL indeed. I have fell victim to Belkin as well. Hence, my overwhelming support for Linksys/Cisco. It does hold up for gaming though.

Which does hold up for gaming?

So is there anything with a stronger signal than 2.462 for wireless?

addendum: does anyone know how the expanders work? Meaning, where do they get set up? At another point in your house?

I run Tomato firmware on mine. My current up-time is a little over 9 months.

Wouldn't recommend using it with stock firmware.

Nice price, but how's the range?

Get the Linksys Wireless G w/ Rangebooster. Trust me no matter how big you place is, the router will reach all workstations/consoles.

Nothing particularly special, but better than your typical Linksys WRT54G.

The custom firmware allows you to boost the power if there are trouble spots / a need to gain a little extra distance.

I have a similar set-up (router is on main floor, 360/PS3 in basement, wife's laptop upstairs) and I use the Linksys WRT160N. I haven't had any problems with it and get good signal strength throughout the house

Do you go through 1 floor or 2. Going up 1 floor is fine. Going up 2 to the opposite end of the townhome sux.

My title is wrong. I'm actually looking for a router with more power/better range, not just any ordinary wireless routers.
