Re: Windows 7 problems
I have Uverse and have no problems.
I do recall with ATT DSL without a phone line I was required to install some ATT software to register/ activate my brand new but once it was running I no longer needed it. Might what to verify how their DSL is set up, router or modem.Comment

Re: Windows 7 problems
I've recently changed jobs so I support a specific software so I no longer have to deal with the regular idiots that don't have a clue what they're doing.
Some of the classic issues I had supporting Windows users:
"What's a 'Start button?"
"What do you mean 'internet'?"
"When I have a power outage, I can't use my computer"
"I've never heard of Internet Explorer. But I use a big blue E to look at the internet"
One woman called in swearing that she had a virus that was dialing long distance numbers. She had a phone bill that totaled over $1900.
After 10 seconds of investigation I discovered the problem. She was using AT&T's global dialer. For those that don't understand what this does, it allows you to dial into a local number anywhere in the world so that you have a cheaper and faster connection.
So if you're in Chicago, you choose Illinois and Chicago and it presents you with a list of numbers that are local to your residence.
This woman lived in Barrie, Ontario. So when she needed to get a dial-up connection what city/province do you think she chose? Why Cairo, Egypt of course! And the next day? Tokyo, Japan!
After I explained to her that she was a moron and should have choked on her own tongue years ago, she gave the typical argument most moron's give "I'm in sales! I'm not in computers! How am I supposed to know how this works???".
Some days I felt like answering "I'm not a mechanic but I still know how to drive a car!"
IT Support sucks bigtime.Comment

Re: Windows 7 problems
I can laugh about them now, but as you know, at the time you're ready to jump out of a window.
There are days I wonder if computers have really helped us or hurt us.
In certain fields I would say they've been great. Especially the medical field.
But in other area's I wonder. For instance, the product I support will track all network traffic.
So if you run a website you can see the average response time for certain pages to return.
Is it really crucial to know that you're website had a response time was 2.5/s but is now 3.0/s?
A lot of the time I think products like mine are designed to scare people into thinking that they need to monitor that or else they'll lose billions of dollars.
In the end, computers are mostly used for internet surfing. And according to studies 90% of it is for porn. Awesome.
When I go the supermarket everything is computerized. Every time a product is scanned it's fed to a mainframe that says they're less 1 quantity of that product so they know how much has to be ordered.
It's incredibly convenient for the store and saves money.
But wouldn't we be better off if there were people manually writing out the inventory? There'd be more jobs and more money floating through the economy.
I don't know. Maybe I'm a glorified tree hugger. But some days I think computers have hurt us more than helped.
Just look at Twitter. Say what you want with the least amount of words possible. Pretty soon we'll be back to the stone age when we just grunt to communicate.
We're regressing.
Maybe that's how I can strike it rich. I'll create an app called "Grunt" where you have to input unintelligible words to communicate around the globe.

Re: Windows 7 problems
LOL. So true.
I would say that in my previous help desk position this fixed every problem 50% of the time.
Everyone would laugh at us when we'd say 'reboot' but it worked more often than naught.
Man I need to get a different job. Hahaha.Comment

Re: Windows 7 problems
I feel your pain. While I was in college I did tech support with the public and it was very brutal. But, here's a good one, I now support $60,000+ business software, and this is a conversation I had with a "developer"..
This person had an issue connecting to a FTP server through our software. We tested and tested and couldn't find an issue anywhere with our code. Turns out their wireless network is locked down and doesn't allow FTP so she needs to plug in to the wired network. She asked, "how do I use the wired network?" My quick response was, you plug it in....
Anyway, I get crazy amounts of blue screen crashes with Windows 7. I suspect it is my USB wireless adapter which doesn't have Windows 7 drivers yet..Anyway, it is a big pain to use right now. So I just use my Macbook..Comment
