Has there been a real original epic movie this decade?

I'm not talking about a remake. I'm talking about a Star Wars, ET, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Godfather, etc. type of movie.

The closest would be The Dark Knight, but IMO it doesn't count because it was a (albeit very good) remake. LOTR movies fall into the same category.

Pirates of the Carribean, I Am Legend are also close but they just didn't feel as big as the other movies/

The Godfather and Jurassic Park were both based off books

Obviously. But neither were made into films unlike The Dark Knight and LOTR.

As a side bar i absolutely hate hate hated that movie.

And the answer to this question is probably not. It seems Hollywood has tapped 95% of its creativity and can only remake older movies (that werent that good in the 1st place) or "re-imagine" older movies (that werent that good in the 1st place). Things are really bad when crap like Stepfather (even though Sean from Nip/Tuck was perfectly casted) is getting the green light for a major release.

The movie i've enjoyed the most in the last 5 years is probably Iron Man, and thats pretty sad.

I'd go with The Matrix, but I think it came out in 99. So I'll take the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

              Yup Matrix was '99.

PotC isn't original,it's based on the ride. I Am Legend is based on a book that already had 2 movies based on it so also not original.

Gladiator for sure, and The Passion of the Christ.

You can't compare the 2000s LotR movies to the ****ty animated ones. If Jurassic Park and The Godfather count, LotR counts.

If LotR and City of God don't count because of books and Traffic and TDK don't count for previous incarnations, I'll go with Gladiator.

This made me think how ridiculous the concept of "original" storytelling is. Every basic story has been told before this decade, and probably before the first millennium. Well that is what Georges Polti taught me.

Thats true theres only like 5-10 original ideas and everything else is based on those 5-10 things and by this point everything that can be done with them has been done.
