What about the Pixar movies (Up, Shrek, Finding Nemo, Monster's Inc, etc), Bourne series, Kill Bill, Cast Away, American Gangster

You can't disqualify a movie because it's based on a book. My goodness that would eliminate some of the greatest movies of all time if you did that.

Anyways as far as this decade goes....Y'know there really hasn't been a truly great epic movie. I'd say The Dark Knight. A reboot isn't a remake.

I'd say movies based off books don't count. Movies that have already been made do count. The Hobbit and the previous Batman series made alot of money, so there isn't as much risk to make that money.

Yes TDK is certainly not a remake, I guess the OP meant reboot. In fact I'll go as far as saying that it's above a reboot. It's a total reinvention that stands on it's own merits. It reinvented the Batman fable in that the Joker did not even remotely resemble the ones we have known before to a point that it's a stand alone movie that took little influence from the history of Batman and made it's own universe because of the new dynamic it created between Batman and the Joker that was never seen before.

If that's not an original epic then I don't know what is.

The Matrix sequels. They just weren't all that good (but imo, neither was Star Wars).

The only think that could be considered a total reinvention in TDK was the Joker character, which coincidentally was the only thing good about it imo. Even that wasn't too much of a stretch from what had been seen in the comics.

Eh? You mean the kiddie song-and-dance Hobbit from the '70s? Or the animated LOTR from 1978 that was such a financial bomb that the studio refused to fund the sequel (the movie finished about midway through The Two Towers)?

Several studios walked away from Jackson's proposed movies before New Line signed on (mainly because their CEO was a huge Tolkien fan). It seems silly now, but film insiders at the time thought New Line was taking a terrible risk that would've doomed the company if it didn't succeed. The movies cost $275M US, the vast majority of which had already been sunk into the trilogy before Fellowship of the Ring was released. Hardly your typical no-risk remake.

So, if it was a book first, then it was not original. So really this topic if looking for Best Original Screenplay of an epic movie this decade?

Pan's Labryinth, Million Dollar Baby, Memento, Inglorious Basterds?

And I think there are four movies that have yet to be released that could fall into this category: Inception, Avatar, The Lovely Bones, and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

Pretty sure The Lovely Bones was a book.

So the movie can't have a book that it's based on, previous works that's it's related on, or a remake? Are we also talking about movies that made it big at the box office or just plain great movies period? I'm definitely looking forward to Avatar to see if the hype is worth it. Why will it be in theaters for three weeks only though Renegade44??

If the supply is low, the demand is high. Announcing this beforehand makes everyone want to go within these three weeks.
