Anyone use Hangouts app for SMS now? It keeps telling me that I can, but don't want to swap from the one my phone has without knowing it's not gonna kill my battery or be annoying.

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

I am using hangouts exclusively for sms currently. it works pretty well the only thing I do not like is that it doesn't wake up my screen whenever a message comes through... I am sure there is a way to fix it, I just don't know what it is and don't care enough to research it.Comment

Been using MMS in Hangouts since it's been available and it's worked for me like a charm. I do all my texting on my S3 through hangouts now just because I prefer the interface.Comment

Love using Hangouts as my new SMS replacement. Haven't noticed any extra battery strain, and it's very responsive.

What is Hangouts? I keep getting notifications for it on my phone. Is that Google's texting app or something?Comment

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

It's Google's chat app that used to go by Google Talk. You can do group chats like Kik or Whatsapp or individual chats. It also does video calls a la Facetime.

The SMS Option is that it can be used to send and receive SMS/MMS also, so you don't have to go to two different apps to get your messaging.

I posted this in Off Topic, but you guys should see this too:

I just started a beta testing program on the Google Play store for a calendar app that I wrote. If anyone's interested in giving it a try, send me a PM and I'll invite you to a Google Plus Community.Last edited by The GIGGAS; 12-15-2013, 12:27 PM.Rose City 'Til I Die

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

Thanks. I looked into it a bit more. Something isn't working right for nexus 7's and hangouts. It doesn't allow the enabling of sms in hangouts above 4.3. There's some reports that Google is saying it's intentional but that doesn't make sense.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

Facebook took sms out of their messenger too (which is too bad, since that's the app I used for my sms messaging).

I tried using hangouts, but the lack of contact pictures next to names bugged me, so I just use my default texting app.

I have contact pictures next to everyone that I have pictures for in regular contacts or Google+ so that's a bit odd. Wonder why they aren't showing up for you.Facebook took sms out of their messenger too (which is too bad, since that's the app I used for my sms messaging).

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

I have the HTC One and I'm having battery life issues. I'll go to bed with 60 to 70% power and get woken up by my phone beeping because it has less than 20% power.

Do any of the battery saving apps actually work?

 Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

I have a Galaxy S4 and this was happening to me a couple of weeks ago. For me it was Google Play Services that was constantly running that was killing my battery. It was taking up over 50% of my battery even when I wasn't doing anything and no apps running in the background. It was like this for almost a week or so before it stopped.Comment
