    Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

Is there a site or anything which shows latest/continued support for android phones/tablets? Meaning the OS of it.

I'm looking into getting new (unlocked) phone and possibly tablet, but I don't want to get one and find out there will be no new updates for it. Nougat is best I can find for most when looking online, but I don't know if it means that's the latest update that'll ever be available, or if that's just the default version (meaning I can update to Oreo).

Haven't gotten anything new in a few years now but it's crazy how much things have changed in a few years. Back then I never cared about any of the smart home stuff and I mostly played app games. Now, it's almost opposite.

Upgraded to the Galaxy S9+ from an S5. I am not the biggest fan of the massive phone, but the last two phones I've had for at least 4 years. So I went with the option with a little bit better tech specs.

Deciding to get an unlocked Samsung Galaxy phone. Most likely ordering from Amazon(although Best Buy has same price online. Probably better going through them just in case?). Best case scenario, I get a new phone by next week for the first time in years!

From what I heard, some of these phones still on Nougat will be upgrading to Oreo before the year is up.

For anyone really familiar with different versions, what's been some of the biggest differences in Android OS the past few versions?

Will they be updating to Pie, the most recent one out? That one has the biggest visual changes with regards to gestures, a 'different' Home soft button (now sort of a pill), difference in how multitasking and notifications work, and some other things.

I would suggest looking at some YouTube videos from either MKBHD, Mr. Mobile, or even The Verge to see how Pie changed compared to Oreo compared to Nougat. Personally, I like Pie, but it took a little adjusting off the bat to how the swipes worked.

Don't think they'll be updating to pie. But as long as the apps I use don't require pie being the minimum OS to work within the next few years, I'll be ok.

Even my current phone, if most apps I want actually worked on it, I'd probably keep it. Getting a new phone with more storage, slightly more RAM, and a much newer OS vs my old phone, hard to turn down.

Android flagships is usually 2 years of OS updates 3 years of security updates. Samsung is notoriously late with OS updates.

Seriously leaning towards either a used S8+ or Note 8. I just can't talk myself into paying more than $400 for a phone.

Have a Galaxy note 8 and have been with Samsung and the Note series for quite some time. Thinking about making the switch to the Pixel XL I believe it is, how is this phone compared to the Note? All I know is it's cheaper and has a better camera.

If I was going to ditch my iPhone, a Pixel is the only way I’d go. I’m big on software updates and you should get at least a few with a Pixel.

Is it sad I'm still on Android 4.4? I like my tablet. No issues with it. Though I made mistake of buying it without looking at if it gets updates. Updates were abandoned for it early on.

Next time I buy a tablet, even a phone for that matter, that's the biggest thing I care about, the android version and longevity of updates. I don't wear out my things like most people, so I plan on keeping them for as long as I can. Don't see need to get new ones every 2-3 years.

Might get new tablet and/or phone by Christmas. Just hope I get ones that keep updating. Don't want to get one and updates get abandoned early and eventually some apps require versions beyond what I have again.
still rocking lollipop on my lg g4 because it gives the best battery life and system access to things that started being locked down in android 6+

                    Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....
                    Kenny: Everyone wins?!?!

These phones are having that pink line through the middle issue

While perfectly happy with my iPhone XS Max, I couldn’t resist buying a OnePlus 6T since it’s now whitelisted on Verizon. I’ve been wanting to try a OnePlus device for years.

Nole, the Oxygen OS is a very nice OS. As for the phone, One Plus makes some great phones.

I have a family member who loves his One Plus. Now that it's on both Verizon and T-Mobile hopefully people will give it a shot.

Once it's available, I'm definitely gonna give them a try..

I ordered mine direct from OnePlus yesterday morning. Should be here by Tuesday then I’ll put the XS Max in the drawer for a while (leaving enough time to return to OnePlus if needed).

This is my first time in almost 8-10 years trying an Android phone. I still kept my iPhone 7 plus because I didn't know if I would like the phone but this one plus is great so far. Still getting used to everything.

Been using this OnePlus since about 230p. Man it's nice. Big screen but feels smaller in my hand than the XS Max.
