Reinstalling the windows operating system.
I dropped my fiance's computer off at best buy because it was having issues. The guy called me today and told me that they recommended that the operating system be re-installed because the computer was infect with spyware. I have two questions. What does that mean? and How hard is it to do myself because I refuse to pay them $130.00Favorite Teams:

Re: Reinstalling the windows operating system.
What does what mean, exactly? Reinstalling or infected with spyware?
As for how hard - you put a CD in, you have it format the drive, and then it all installs by itself. After that, you just need to install your drivers and programs. It's easy, but it can take a while. $130 is a rip off. -
Re: Reinstalling the windows operating system.
That's what I'm thinking....
Backing up the data and reinstalling the OS/applications is easy. Tell them to forget it. They probably won't even do a good job anyway. My Aunt took her computer to the Geek Squad at Best Buy because I was too busy to fix it for her and they did more harm than good. Truthfully, I don't think those guys have a damn clue what they're doing... It's why they're working at the Geek Squad and not as a Sys Admin/Engineer at a corporation (IMO).Comment

Yep they did try to charge me 130 for the reinstall. I told the dude that that was crazy and I would send my fiance to pick the computer upFavorite Teams:

Re: Reinstalling the windows operating system.
OK Just got home and looked at the laptop. They upgraded the computer from Vista to Windows 7 but say I should reinstall the operating system (for $130 of course). I have the disk from the upgrade (cost 39.99 instead of $100+ )I'll probably begin the process tonight.Favorite Teams:
