Not very many good albums this year.. kind of a slow year for music.

I guess I'd have to say The Blueprint III was the best of the year.

I would like to add Brand New's Daisy to the list. These guys have only gotten better as their career has gone on. Daisy may actually be a small step back from their last disc, the Devil and God Raging Inside Me, but it's still pretty good.

Just my .02 but how can anyone ever, and I really do mean ever say that there weren't "very many good albums this year, it was a slow year for music"? I don't think it's possible for a year to be "slow in music".

That's about the most idiotic thing one could ever say unless maybe your taste in music is limited to mainstream rap? But even then I'd still say it was a dumb thing to say.

How is it a dumb thing to say when it's strictly a matter of opinion? Unless you take the slow comment to mean that there was little volume in music this year, I can't even fathom how someone could be an idiot for thinking there wasn't much great music put out this year.

I didn't think there was much quality in this year's crop of releases. I spent a lot of money on CD's this year (like I do every year) but I ended up buying a lot of older stuff I had either missed out on or had kept putting off. There were some albums I listened to a bit when I got them, but few had any longevity. There were only three standouts for me, and the first two are even somewhat of a stretch:

Megadeth - Endgame: A good back to basics kind of release with all of the usual Megadeth tricks and pristine guitar work by Mustaine. The album's flaw really is that it is more of the same. In the same style as Rust in Peace, just not without the genre defining sound. Considering Megadeth's last few releases though, this one is a success.

Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know: This one surprised me in that I really didn't expect this quartet of sixty-somethings to have much left. What we got is some really nice doom metal that at times has more in common with Ozzy era Sabbath than Dio era Sabbath. That is likely due to Dio's age and the fact that he just can't see the way he used to anymore. There are some moments of speed on the album though, as evidenced by the thrilling "Eating the Cannibals" but I find a lot of the mid-tempo stuff to be quite good. Iommi saved a few choice riffs for this one. On a semi-related note, here's hoping Mr. Dio is able to have a speedy recovery from stomach cancer and get back to doing what he loves and what he love seeing him do.

Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue: Easily the best album of 2009 for me. Again, my expectations were mixed going in as it had been so long since the release of the last AiC album. With no Staley, all bets were off. What stands out most for me with this album are the rich textures Cantrell and Co. were able to come up with. The production values are excellent as the many sonic layers give way to pristine clarity at times that makes for a nice mix. I would have liked to have heard a little more from newcomer William DuVall but cannot deny that Cantrell's lead vocal work fits most of the tracks. Ultimately what did it most for me was that this sounded like Alice in Chains, or at least how I imagined AiC would sound in the year 2009 had everything gone well for the group. I won't go so far as to say Staley isn't missed, but the band's legacy has only been strengthened by this release much to the delight of the many still remaining AiC fans that have been waiting a long time for this to happen. Hopefully this lineup continues to produce quality music.

Again, I bought a lot more music than just those three albums (and a lot more 2009 discs) but those are the only stand-outs. I have great expectations going into 2010 with new music on the way from some of my favorite artists including Kamelot and Blind Guardian.

6-11 is sorta set in terms of the CDs and the order is kinda set too
                          6.) Billy Talent - III
7.) Three Days Grace - Life Starts Now
