ODogg, I'm assuming you have the '68 Comeback Special on DVD. The sit-down show is amazing to watch.

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fiRdG5nDLmo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fiRdG5nDLmo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
My favorite "era" was Elvis before he went into the military. I love hearing the bass strings tick on That's All Right.

The "Beatles" first recorded song was a composition mirrored after Trying to Get to You entitled "In Spite of all the Danger." This was 1958. Very interesting hearng the Elvis song and then this-

In my history of rock class last year, it was interesting to hear exactly how much The Beatles loved Elvis and Carl Perkins.

That'd be an awesome class to take Fresh Tendrils!

Does anyone else find it odd that Sirius has Elvis' channel under POP listing instead of ROCK???

Elvis was big to only one section of America. The lines are pretty strictly drawn too. I don't know too many folk that like Elvis.

Not true J.R...I read a recent poll that said 84% of adult Americans feel that Elvis touched their lives in some way. You and your friends (if you truly know them well enough to really know if they like Elvis) must be the overall exceptional 16% of that poll.

To be fair, he said he did not know of many adults that "liked" Elvis. Something can touch you without you liking it. Ask any kid with a creepy uncle wandering around the house, lol. Having said that, polls like that are hardly scientific.

That's true, but like i said, he could also be an exception to the rule...or more likely he has friends and family who do like Elvis but don't advertise it or talk about it or perhaps even might deny it if asked. You know some folks view Elvis as somewhat of a joke because his image has been so lampooned and made light of in popular culture. I'm sure there are tons of "closeted" Elvis fans out there because of that.

I think its because besides being an awesome stage performer, it is hard to have a long lasting idolization/respect someone who did not write their own music. Sort of like how I have a hard time respecting any American Idol winner. To me, the real like/respect goes to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the two men responsible for so many of those 1950's and 60's hits. To my recollection, Elvis only has his name on 9 song writing credits, and that is due to some good business tactics via Col Parker.

When we are talking about such a thing, historically Elvis did 2 things-

                        1. Made Rock and roll "white" and opened the door for the Beatles as Fresh alluded to.

                        2. Linked rock and roll and sex appeal to the mass public.

I think you forgot the most important thing - he made rock and roll rebellious and thus massively appealing to the young folks and that's what caught Rock on fire and made it what it is. Having watched several Elvis documentaries this past weekend I think that was the main thing that they hammered home...although I must admit it's sort of hard to relate to how the parents got all shook up (heh) over Elvis' dancing. I mean I wonder what those same folks would have thought of 2 Live Crew? LMAO!!

I'm watching the full 68 "comeback" special now and HOLY ****, I can't believe I'm 39 years old and just now discovering how great Elvis is. My mom raised me on Elvis but I never really listened...until now. I honestly am regretful I never saw him in concert before he died.
