I merely think stuff like this, along with checking shoes and limiting liquids is mostly security theater though. The actual relevance of these kinds of checks depends entirely on the idea that we can protect ourselves from terrorism by protecting against what the terrorists tried last time. It's both an awful way to combat terrorism, and an utter waste of money.
I would feel more personally violated by letting TSA see those images then the X-Ray "Total Recall" style ones. You can pretty much see the entire naked body.

I'm all for actually increasing security and doing it more efficiently, but if the terrorist has made it to the airport, the system has already failed.

The flaming underwear guy was on a watch list, bought a one-way ticket to the US with cash and no baggage, and nobody even raised an eyebrow. Nothing at the airport is going to save anyone from a determined individual with a plan.

Makes you wonder if they don't have their own "lists" on which airports are pretty lax in their methods and attitude. I don't see him trying this at Dulles.

Airlines companies are private companies right? If they want to scan people who use their service they should be able to.

I'm not sure about the Dutch, but in America, the airlines are far from private companies. Airlines in this country take billions from the federal government, and have strict federal control via the FAA. I'd venture to say Airlines are more public controlled than they are private, except the public doesn't get a share of the profit.

Also, I would consider these scans to be the equivalent of non-violent rape. What else would you label the act of forcing someone to strip against their will?

And don't give me any of that nonsense about these scans and all the other bogus hoops you have to jump through (taking shoes off, no liquid over 3oz, etc..) being for your security and airline protection. You want security on the airlines? You want protection? Fine, but it comes at a price:

Step 1: Every individual undergoes a full-body examination prior to boarding. Complete removal of clothing and jewelry, along with a rectal and oral exam to look for weapons.

Step 2: Every passenger aboard the plane be strapped into their seat, alongside being placed in a straight-jacket. No one moves on the flight.

Step 3: No baggage. If you are traveling and you want to bring items, ship them with UPS. No carry-on, no cargo, no luggage down below. NO BAGGAGE.

Step 4: A United States Air Marshall located in every section of the plane (tail section, mid section, front section). He or she will be placed at the front of each section, seating with their view directly towards the passengers. You move, you die.

If you want security, you cannot half-*** it. All these other security measures are merely put in place to give you the guise that you are safe, but in actuality are just excercises which you you and everyone else at an inconvenience. If you truly want your ****ing security, get naked and accept being strapped into your seat without being able to bring any luggage with you. Otherwise, what you really want is the guise of security without being hassled too much.

It's simple: Don't fly if you don't want to have to go through this type of screening.

No one is making you fly.

It's funny what people will freak out about.

Don't make me pay for a service I don't use then.

If I have to pay taxes to put these types of security measures in place (they are funded and conducted by the TSA, a government agency), then I most definitely do have a say.

I don't want to make this thread political, but you obviously have no idea of how taxes are supposed to work.

The airline industry, even if you choose not to fly, is a vital part of our infrastructure.

How often do you ride the train? How often does anyone ride the train anymore (not city metros or subways)? They receive government funding as well because of it's importance in our infrastructure.

There are worse things your taxes are going towards. Trust me.

I don't think anyone is stripping.

The picture shown is of a fully clothed person.

No problem with these anything to help stop terrorists, although I think this is really just for show. The best security is common sense and common sense was not used at all in the Northwest Airlines incident.

I really wouldn't be surprised at all if this wasn't at least partially to stop drug trafficking. Belgium and the Netherlands are the primary producers of MDMA and as I understand much of it is flown out of the Amsterdam airport to the US and UK.

I so see someone hacking their database and putting all the pictures they scan out on the internet.

The way I see it is it is a privilege to fly, not a right. If you want to fly then you follow whatever rules are set in place that make it possible for you to do so. Otherwise, drive or take a boat.
