    Re: Simpsons or Family Guy

The Simpson's is way past it's prime and is basically the Dick Clark of cartoon sitcoms.

I used to love the Family Guy but, for me, it kind of lost it's luster after South Park made fun of it and I realized all of their jokes were pretty much the same thing and none of the shows really had a point.

So, South Park easily tops both of them and it's not even close.

Family guy is just to over the top sometimes. Not sure how making fun of Pat Tillman is funny.

The Simpsons if you only take the first ten seasons into consideration. I enjoyed Family Guy before it was canceled, but I can't get into any of it after it came back. South Park crapped all over it. It's nothing more than a few pop culture references each episode, with no plot or story direction. Instead of putting out three different animated shows, Seth MacFarlane should work on making one of them, at least decently funny.

No television cartoon has ever made me laugh as hard as Family Guy. Simpsons has great characters, but I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud at it.

In their prime, the Simpsons had a good ten year run that produced some of the greatest comedy every for television. I still pop in the early seasons on DVD because they are so good. Family Guy was good for about five seasons, and then it really fell hard on its face. Now, it's mainly Conservative bashing and stupidity for the point of stupidity. Both shows should be meeting their maker sooner than later.

The Simpsons is the greatest show to ever be televised. In it's prime it was flat out better than any other sitcom, most namely Friends and Seinfeld. This season for those who may not be watching The Simpsons have found that stride they had in the mid 90's.

I never found The Simpsons funny, but it could just be that I'm not interested in the characters (or people being yellow). When I read those Top 50 lines for Homer, I found them funnier when I tried to read them as Peter Griffin and not as Homer Simpson. It could just be in the characters that I find things funnier. It's the same reason why we laugh at Seth Rogen on screen, but if I said the same thing it wouldn't be funny at all.

                    Re: Simpsons or Family Guy

The Simpsons has heart, Family Guy does not.

The Simpsons (especially in its prime) told cohesive stories, Family Guy did that for Season 1 and then basically decolved into non-sequitors once they realized that was their niche.

The Simpsons isn't nearly as funny as it once was, but it's still better than most things on TV on a basic comedic level. Family Guy fell off in many ways (lost the original formula, the cohesive plots, but sustained the quickfire jokes and gained a political edge it didn't have before) but is still basically what it was aside from random episodes that are really bad... it's a series of quickfire jokes and references rooted in pop culture that occur based loosely on the actions of the Griffin family... no real connection there most of the time.

The Simpsons at 20 years is better than 99.9% of shows would be at that stage. Can you imagine the other great shows of our day extended to 20 years? Would ANY of them still be decent after that long? Granted, live-action shows face a greater set of obstacles in that regard (especially ones with kids) than animated ones do, but does anyone honestly think Family Guy would still be as funny in its 20th season? The Simpsons is held to a RIDICULOUS standard that no other show is held to. Further, does anyone see themselves watching Family Guy episodes 15 years from now? To me it seems like its sole purpose would be nostalgia since 95% of the show would be EXTREMELY dated references. Meanwhile, I can watch an episode of The Simpsons from 1991 and aside from a few random out of place references (TVs with antennas, small mentions of pop culture), the humor and story would be intact.

I enjoy both shows, but the humor on The Simpsons (especially in the glory days but I'd even argue that it's still the case) is just more developed... they don't just rely upon one type of joke to get laughs, the humor comes from everything basically -- the ensemble cast does so much for the show for that reason. Family Guy is more or less a one-note show but excels at that one note, which is rapid-fire pop culture references and jokes that ride the line of good taste.

Watch an episode like "You Only Move Twice" and it's FILLED with jokes but they don't have to segue away to some unrelated scene to get a laugh from the audience... it all comes directly from the characters, none of it is offensive just for the sake of it, and it all ties in directly to the story. I challenge anyone to find an episode of Family Guy after Season 1 that is even close to being that cohesive... you'll come up pretty empty. Meanwhile, I could come back with a list of about 100 Simpsons episodes that are that cohesive and nearly that funny (that happens to be my #1 episode ever) with little effort.

Plus, you can watch The Simpsons with kids and not have to worry about a ton of offensive things being said or much foul language -- I don't have kids, but there's something to be said for that since most parents are forced to watch nothing but kids shows when the kids are awake.

Most young boy cartoon characters are voiced by female voice actors due to young boys having a higher pitched voice than teenage and adult males. I don't see why that should make a difference to you.

I watch reruns of both. I dont make time to watch new ones (eventually I see them). Started watching Simpsons when they were clips on the Tracy Ullman show.
