I'm sure that would be much more expensive than print SI and it's not that much different. I can get all the extra stuff on the computer for the most part.

It's pretty cool, but I don't think I'd have much use for it. I like having something tangible that I can hold in my hands.

I'm assuming this would be a service where you could select how many subscriptions, and which ones, you wanted to buy. I think it looks sweet and, as long as it's reasonably priced, would get it whenever it comes out.

Is it the future of print media? Unlikely. I don't see this creating a market for print media any more than what's available online or on mobile phones. Still, I think it looks sweet and I can't wait to get one.

The only way I can see something like this working is if it's on a phone. I'm not going to carry around something like that to read it, and if I'm sitting at home I don't mind checking the stuff out on the computer since all it basically seems to be is a bigger touch screen PC anyway.

I do most of my reading through reader apps on my phone anyway, so if they made the stuff accessible that way I could see it possibly being popular, but other than that is anyone actually going to carry it around?

They could just do all that very easily in a computer program.

These tablets companies are trying to use are never going to catch on. All the book companies and Amazon and all those are trying them too. They're too cumbersome and do not do anything a normal computer or even a phone can do.

Time would be smart to scrap the tablet and just make an incredibly extensive computer program and a sick iPhone App. It would do much better.


Nonetheless, this is a very interesting concept to save the print journalism industry. I'm going to graduate with a journalism degree in May, and, while my degree is mainly for broadcasting, I still find the print industry very interesting and will look for any jobs that might be available.

This is the way for print to go though (just not in tablet format... switch it to computer/phone). Interaction and customizability are the only ways the print industry can survive.

I can't see myself using something like that. I mean the size alone would be a burden. I'd have to blow it up to the point that i'd be losing the greatness of it. I don't think these tablet sized things are going to be the future on their own but rather a supplement to what you can get in print. It'd be like a website type thing where the stories are constantly updated and such and there's more interactive but I think the long form prose of magazine writing and the magazine format isn't going to totally die.

Now where I do see huge change in print media would be the Comic Book medium. I think by the end of this decade monthlies will no longer be around in print form but rather as a downloadable app for the PC, Iphone, etc etc. The printing of material in comic books will be geared more towards OGNs (Original Graphic Novels) and collected editions/TPB in bookstores.

I could also see this type of technology replacing newspapers as well as I can see newspapers being downloaded into your app of choice or as a supplement to a website which would save the publishers a TON of money. Books and magazines on the other hand still have at least 20 years or more left in print because there's too many people who'd rather read something tangible rather then staring at a screen. (whether it be kindle, Iphone or PC)

That's the beauty of technology. You can't see yourself using something... next thing you know, it's the basis of your life.

This is completely different.

The smartphone consolidated your technological possessions. It put everything in one place. And people already used cell phones, so why not add more incredibly useful stuff to your cell phone?

This tablet is just another thing I have to carry around. It's senseless and impractical, especially when I could do most of that stuff with an iPhone or on my laptop (granted, the touchscreen stuff wouldn't go on an laptop) given that Time designed it for those mediums.

No, there is no hardware on display here. This is a sample of "print" media you could possibly see on a tablet like device.

There are plenty of people who would pay more than a netbook for a touchscreen notebook. And Apple is going to prove me right this year. They have hardware, and this is simply a software exhibition on some imaginary piece of hardware.

Again, you don't even know you need it... until you need it. We can bump this thread in a year so I can say I told you so.
