    Re: Music Library Management

I don't have a problem with iTunes. I just needed something more efficient.

The reason I like Mediamonkey more is because I wanted something that would allow me to set up a standard way for my songs and file names to be tagged and named. Mediamonkey allows this, which is nice because all I have to do now is right-click and select auto-tag or auto-organize and everything is done.

I don't think you can do that in iTunes.

I've been using iTunes for my media (music, movies, television shows, and video/audio podcasts) for years, and have had no issues whatsoever.

You mention iTunes being "unstreamlined." Well, looking at screenshots of MediaMonkey (from here), for example iTunes is much, much more streamlined. That software looks so cluttered to me, I wouldn't know where to begin if I were to use it.
Oh yeah I'm really fuming over iTunes.

I just think it sucks. As a media player, it is terrible compared to winamp, VLC, or WMP Classic. As a library manager, it isn't even great. Just putting songs on an iPod takes about 50x longer than it used to on mp3 players where you just drag and drop. It comes with a store that I didn't ask for. I got the iPod to put my music on, not load up some program that uses 200mb of memory. Can you possibly see where I'm coming from? I don't want some jack of all trades programs to impose its will and take over my soul when I just want to throw a Mastodon song on my iPod.

When you say things like "scripts" and such what exactly does that intale? My main question is the software user friendly like the iTunes & WMP software or is this something that forces the user to have a more extensive knowledge of computers.

EX: I can manage my files manually without any problems using Windows Explorer, iTunes, WMP, etc but it is simply far too time consuming.

          By scripts I mean add-ons/plugins.

For instance, I have one that auto-imports play count from last.fm. I use last.fm to track what I'm listening to and when I made the switch to Mediamonkey, I wanted my play counts identical (just a pet peeve).

There's also one that automatically checks the case of the characters in your songs and auto-corrects them.

There's scripts that auto-rate your songs based on certain variables such as how many times you've listened to it, whether or not you skip through it, etc.

Tons of things like that floating around, and many more that I haven't explored yet. As well as skins, even a few iTunes duplicates so it doesn't have to look like an "unstreamlined pile of crap." I also appreciate the way you can customize the look of your player by dragging the different boxes to different areas on the player.

            Re: Music Library Management

Okay got another question about said program you're using.

I've just recently been tooling with iTunes on my CPU and got an iPod last month and was wondering if there is a way to create iTunes playlists and use them in other programs/mp3 players?

For instance, I use a Samsung T9 mp3 player for running/gym because it's small & durable as opposed to my 30GB+ bulky iPod but I'm not able to find a way to use playlists for both. It's a pain creating a playlist for one piece of hardware only to have to go in and replicate it for another. Is there anyway to use one playlist "file" for dual hardware?

The Samsung came with proprietary software for media management but I simply use Window Media Player as my sync. If that helps at all.... I guess my question is: will the software you recommend allow me to do an all-in-one playlist generator so as not to have to repeat everything?

Well that's cool if it's working for you. Millions of people probably do love it. It just annoyed the piss out of me when I had an ipod.

I hate how it forces pointless software on me. Why the hell do I need quicktime, or the four programs that run in the background after you shut down itunes?

I hate how it is slow as hell when managing my 200 gigs of music.

I hate how it randomly duplicates songs in the library for no real rational reason.

I hate how an itunes update corrupted my shuffle, and I was never able to get it working again. Thanks Apple, money well spent.

My sansa player can be managed as easily as plugging it in a USB slot and dragging anything I want onto it. It even sorts everything by the tags, so I don't even need a bloated program to manage such a difficult task.

I generally use Amarok as my go-to music player (on Ubuntu). I found out today that it had organization features... so of course, I'm going to test those out right after I get home (and buy TEW2010).

Yessir. Mediamonkey has iPod/iPhone support as well as several other devices. The big one that I know it doesn't have is Zune, which I own.

I also prefer Mediamonkey for it's playlist abilities. It beats winamp/wmp hands down in that department imo. Runs close with iTunes. And you can create playlists inside the program as well as export them or import playlists you created elsewhere.

I'm old school I guess, just have everything in separate folders on my external HD and use Winamp.

Media monkey sounds cool but I have a Zune so I guess that makes me SOL.

All you do is connect your iPod to your computer, open iTunes, and put your song on there. I'm not seeing how or why it takes you forever to put a song on your iPod.
