Always gets a laugh out of me.... especially when you watch the soccer/football/basketball/baseball/softball moms with their little flip pads in the stands.

As far as the original thread question, it's easy......

How far can you stick your nose up someone's ***?

Learned to hate all awards shows, other than on The Soup. I don't waste my time.

Up was nominated for best picture.

Mostly what everyone else said and also the simple truth that there are certain movies (see: genres) that the Academy fails to recognize.

Why is the Hangover not nominated? Say what you want about it being funny or not (all preference), but the majority of America felt it was the funniest movie of the year. The majority of the world felt it was the funniest movie ever (based on gross revenue).

So why did the Academy take Avatar, a movie that is mostly a technical phenomena (not disrespect to it but that's what it is) and a high dollar big budget movie, but ignore the highest grossing comedy of all-time?

And why did it not take a similar approach to The Dark Knight when it stood as the top grossing film of the year?

Please keep in mind that I'm not saying one is right or wrong. I'm merely pointing out facts. I also am not stating that dollars made should make a movie great. But, I do think that technical aspects and it's popularity is what got Avatar nominated; not its story (and again, not disrespecting the story. I know I was vocal about not enjoying the film's story, but I'm not bringing that here because this entire post is about facts, not opinions).

If Avatar is nominated for those reasons, why not The Dark Knight?

Obviously bumping the nominations from five to ten helps make this a moot argument, but everyone here knows that Avatar is not the 10th, let alone the 6th, movie in that nomination list. It would have been nominated even if the field were at five.

edit: Also, the answer is because Avatar is considered an epic piece while the Dark Knight is unfortunately labeled as a Superhero film. If The Dark Knight had not been about Batman and instead focused on a regular everyday man that no one knew, it would have been considered a Character Drama/Adventure Epic.

Probably the best answer, in my opinion, in the thread.

I could never get mad at a guy with a Dogfish Head avatar.

I also don't remember your opinions on either movie so I don't know what to expect and want to find out.

I personally don't care about the Oscar process.

Oscars are for artsy type dramas and whatnot.

Movies millions of people enjoy aren't going to win. Just how it is...these awards aren't about what a lot of people like, it's what is the most artistic and deep...

Once you accept that you can enjoy both the artistic movies and the somewhat mindless ones that are fun to watch.

                      This, unfortunately is the reason.

Re: Anyone who understands the Oscar process, please explain...

                        Best Picture:

                        Avatar
                        The Blind Side

                        Actress in a Leading Role:

                        Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side)

These are some of the choices I strongly disagree with. The only major category Avatar belongs in is Visual Effects. If you're going simply on box office, Avatar is the most over-rated movie of all-time. Outside of the amazing visual effects, there's nothing else that is good about the film.

Sandra Bullock is getting the Julie Roberts (Erin Brockovich) treatment. I would be stunned if Bullock doesn't win even though her performance in The Blind Side was nothing special. It's also ironic Bullock is going to win because her role was actually first offered to Julia Roberts but she turned it down.

I also have no idea why (500) Days Of Summer wasn't nominated for Original Screenplay.

                        Best Picture:

Should Win: Up In The Air
                        Will Win: The Hurt Locker

                        Best Director:

                        Should Win: Kathryn Bigelow
                        Will Win: Kathryn Bigelow

                        Actor in a Leading Role:

                        Should Win: George Clooney
                        Will Win: George Clooney

                        Actor in a Supporting Role

                        Should Win: Chris Waltz
                        Will Win: Chris Waltz

                        Actress in a Leading Role:

                        Should Win: Gabourey Sidibe
                        Will Win: Sandra Bullock

                        Actress in a Supporting Role:

                        Should Win: Anna Kendrick
                        Will Win: Mo'Nique

Opinion... Just because you believe this, doesn't mean it's true or that everyone else agrees. There was some great acting in it, there were some very good action scenes, some great art design, and a decent story.

I guess I don't understand why best movie has to be based on just the story as so many people seem to think... I go to a movie to be entertained; Avatar not only entertained it also stunned and wow'd me. I was thinking about it for days afterwards, and that doesn't happen with most movies. I don't see why it shouldn't be nominated. It had a decent story, some great acting, and absolutely the best visual effects ever made. I think that's enough of a reason to nominate it.

Despite my opinion on the film, I agree with you completely. A movie that has this sort of effect on the film industry deserves recognition and a nomination.

It's not a Best Story of the Year Award. It's a Best Film and filmmaking involves all aspects of the production process. Heck, the award goes to the Producers. Not the director, not the actors. The producers. So, yes, Avatar deserves a nomination.

But, if we stay within the original topic, I think for all the reasons Avatar deserves a nomination, so did The Dark Knight. I think that's hard to argue against.

When I think of Best Picture, I think about the whole package: directing, story, acting, writing, pacing of the film, etc.....

In my opinion, Avatar was only successful in one area, visual effects.
