    Boardwalk Empire

New Series coming to HBO. Written by Terence Winter(The Sopranos) and Directed by Martin Scorsese coming this fall. Looks to be a good series. I have been waiting for a while to get some detailed info. All I have had to thus point is Scorsese is doing an HBO series based on AC. Here is the trailer:

    <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QsT3qAVVnew&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QsT3qAVVnew&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

    Thought this was cool:

            Re: Boardwalk Empire

Getting close now-premieres in 11 days (September 19th).

The series is set at the start of Prohibition (1920). English actor Steven Graham plays Al Capone(who was only 21 in 1920) , at least for the first episode . The star of the series, Steve Buscemi, plays Enoch "Nucky" Thompson who is based on Atlantic City political boss and racketeer Enoch L. Johnson.

Interesting why the surname is changed from "Johnson" to "Thompson". Maybe to properly emphasize how loosely the character and events are based in facts.

I'll be there-Buscemi is one of my favorites.

I'll be checking for this for sure... Michael K. Williams (Omar from The Wire) plays a prominent role as well. Between he and Buscemi, it was a watch without even being entranced by that era and the look of it, as I am...

True Blood ends and this slips right into it's place without missing a beat.

                Awesome. I can't wait!

Benn looking forward to this one for a while now. I am a huge fan of Buscemi and Michael Pitt is a very underrated actor too. This should be a fantastic show if executed properly.

I didn't know Omar was in it as well-another reason to watch.

I'm predicting this will be a top 3 or 4 show on TV for the next 5 or 6 years. Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire. Shows like this are starting to make me prefer TV over movies.

Oh yeah, screw a movie... these long episodic shows blow the vast majority of movies away, not only in scope and breadth, but often with acting and writing. Something like The Wire could never be captured in a movie, all the small monents, character development, and buildup is what it's all about... a condensed version of these concepts such as a movie would rob them of what made them special in the interest of cramming it into 3 hours instead of 30+ like many multi-season shows.

I have to totally agree. The fact that there are so few great movies out there says a lot too.

Well, there's even less great TV shows.

I guess it's unfair to compare the two, movies and TV. To make a truly great movie, most everything needs to be on point. Direction, acting, story, visuals.

For a TV show there's a lot more room for error, but there's also more room for creativity. It's easy to spiral off and turn into crap, something that most TV shows are victim of, but if a show can last it has that much more potential.

It's easy to make a case for The Wire as the best form of entertainment and drama in film or TV history. Mad Men is in my top 25 all time in writing for a movie or show. Breaking Bad and The Sopranos are up there, too. And it's hard to find anything funnier than Curb Your Enthusiasm or South Park.

See, this show gets a terrible rap by some people for being nothing but over-the-top grotesque jokes about nothing. Excuses to swear, push the limits, everything.

If people actually watched the show for the topics/themes/messages, they'd realize behind the crude jokes and all of that, this is easily the show that could teach kids the most as they grow up, talks about the widest variety of meaningful life topics, and actually has merit as a damn good, intelligent, television show.

And wow, I can't believe I just defended South Park on an intellectual level, but **** if I don't love that show.
