I'm sorry, but if this is not some sarcastic comment, it may be one of the worst posts I've seen on OS in the 5 years I've been here.

It depends on the part of the country.

In states with very strong unions those professions can be highly overpaid, especially with pension plans being factored in.

So the 343 NYC firefighters who perised on 9/11 were all "glorified babysitters"?

I was referring more to the "glorified babysitters" comment, not the overpaid part.

I can buy elementary school teachers as babysitters, but firemen and polie don't make a lot of sense.

Before he was "famous" he had a drinking problem and lost his entire bankroll almost a dozen times. He quit drinking around 2002 and has been winning consistently ever since.

He did, however, lose around 75% of his next worth in the spring of 2009 in a bad business venture.

We aren't unionized, and apparently, that's why my job doesn't fall into that category. Perhaps I should look into relocating.

And the glorified babysitter's comment, i won't even begin in on that.

As someone who works with youth (Boys and Girls Club) I can say that some teacher (especially at "at-risk" schools) are there to just cash a check and make sure that no one dies, but a lot spend their own money on materials and sometimes act as role-model, and parent to a lot of the kids they work with. So baby-sitter they are not.

                            You're in rural Kentucky.

I'm obviously not referring to those areas or even the south, but in richer cities it can be excessive.

Boston has 1432 members of their police department making 6 figures with most of them just being "officer" or "detective."

If you're willing to put up with horrible accents, you should really consider relocating.

a lot of these things are publicity stunts organized by casinos themselves

I should of put this my statement in context.

Where I live we have hardly any fires or crime, in addition to that, the police officers and firemen probably make more money then ones in the bigger cities.

Is a Chicago cop or firefighter overpaid.....NO. Is a Cop/Firefighter in the suburbs overpaid .....YES.
