Re: Anyone have a Roku player?

I did the Plex Media Server on my computer and it seems to be working pretty neatly. I installed some plugins and channels and all that.

If I buy the app on my phone, will I be able to "run the server" from there so my Roku can see it? I don't want to necessarily have my laptop open every time I want to use it on my Roku. Also, if I run the app on my phone, can I access the channels and stuff and stream on my phone?

The phone app is only a player, so you'll have to have the computer that's acting as the server open if you want to stream from it.

Ah ok. So if I have my laptop open with the server up and going, and go to work let's say, I'd be able to access my content and those channels I've installed on my phone?

Oops, looks like I misspoke. It looks like you can share your synced content from your phone to other devices with Plex. It must have snuck by me in an update.

Definitely. You can stream to your phone over the cell network or Wifi as long as you've got the server up and running.

But my main computer would still have to be on to go from my phone to the Roku, right? Because that's where the plugins for the other channels and such are stored?

Anything that's only on your computer would only be accessible (to your Roku or your phone via the app) with that computer up and the server running.

What you can do now with the phone app, apparently, is have that act as a server for whatever files are synced to that phone. So those would be available on your Roku as well. At least that's how it seems. I haven't messed with that yet, as I just keep all my media on my computer that's running the server.

If I bought the channel for Roku, do I have to buy the phone app separately?

EDIT: Nevermind. As fate would have it, http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/1201...-android-users popped up just now and I used it to buy the Plex app for my phone. 5 bucks to buy it for the Roku and free for my phone. Neat.

I just got a Roku 3 because my other one stopped recognizing wifi (sent it in for repair) and I'm having trouble pairing YouTube to my computer if I'm using Firefox. It works just fine to "cast" the video to the Roku if I use YouTube through Chrome but on Firefox it doesn't give me the option to send it to the Roku even if I pair it.

                  Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried the YouTube channel?

Yes that's what I was referring to. When I try to pair it with the code the app on the Roku gives me with my YouTube browser via Firefox (youtube.com/pair) it says it pairs but when I try to watch a video it doesn't give me the option to cast to the Roku Player but when I try it via Chrome, it gives me that option and it works fine. Same for the YouTube app on my phone.

I predominantly use Firefox so it would suck to have to launch Chrome each time I wanted to cast it.

Hmm. I couldn't find much, but this Reddit thread seems to indicate that the cast function only works with Chrome, which would make sense as Chrome and YouTube are Google products.

Yeah I found that thread too. I suppose it's not too much more work to right click and say "view in Chrome" but eh, that's stupid. I mean, the button to "cast" is there when I view videos through Firefox, but when the little menu opens up that says "play on...." it doesn't show the Roku, only "my computer" and I'm already viewing it on that, lol.

Does the Roku Streaming Stick (for Roku ready TVs) provide everything that the most recent Roku 3 has to offer?
