Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

About to get on the comics in a bit. My friend keeps telling me how good this series is so I'm looking forward to it.

Michael Cera is amazing so I will watch anything he's in.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

A rather lofty 80% on the TomatoMeter. Might catch it this weekend.

Saw it yesterday, really liked it and I was lukewarm about going to see it.

did the same director do this that did Kick ***? Im not a comic fan, and never heard of Kick *** but I really liked KA. Something about the way the movie presented itself and the story was told. I think if the same guy made this I might like it.

Different directors...Apparently according to IMDB there's going to be a Kick-*** 2. I didn't know that but thought you'd like to know

Edgar Wright directed this. He has also directed Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

Not doing so well at the Box Office. Although it's only one day, I'm surprised at the numbers.

I didn't expect this to be on top of the B.O. this weekend. It's definitely a cult/niche film. I think the only people excited for this (outside of die hard Cera fans) are the fans of the comic series.

I think you're right. I don't have much interest in this but i'm willing to wager that it'll be a lot like Napoleon Dynamite and other such movies where it'll have a small cult following and then blossom into being a cult favorite for years to come.

So are these people like super villains with powers and hsit? Does everybody have powers?

I like the original concept and design though, looks very interesting to say the least.

Wow sounds like it's getting murdered. Too bad because I really like Edgar Wright. I'll probably wait for it to come out on video before I see it.

It's...weird. Kind of hard to explain because the story exists in some form of reality. Like you can see everything happen to you, but then you have these ex-boyfriends that possess powers and for some reason, Scott Pilgrim has the random ability to defeat them though he never shows he possesses the powers to defeat these powered villains.

I'm basing this purely on the comic and from what I've read the movie follows it pretty well - though, I'm sure in a condensed format since each volume is like 200 pages long and the movie covers all six volumes.

Basically, when it comes to Scott's personal and love life, it is very real. The comic does a great job of conveying a realistic portrayal of a young man's love for someone new in his life and everyone's reactions to him are also done very well (it covers so much of the comic that you don't have to think long and hard why each volume is 200 pages. About 180 pages is purely love life. It's mostly a deep story just sprinkled with action).

After all that, the action kinda jumps out of the page randomly. At first, it is jarring because it varies so much from the rest of the read, but if you can learn to accept it, you'll enjoy it. Also, the comic repeatedly jokes about it being a comic with comments like: "You can tell me more about who you are in Volume 4," or "Remember when we covered that a few pages ago?" Stuff like that. I read that the movie stays true to that in some sense.

So, yea, that's probably more than you asked but there it is.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

I saw it last night. The movie does the comic series justice I thought. You can tell the movie was written before the last comic was released, but not really something that ruins the film (at least not for me). I thought the casting was wonderful and it really felt like most scenes were pages from the comic coming to life. I thought it was awesome how they really captured the comic's style, especially the characters' eyes. And Mary Winstead...oh my gawd.

As for the movie itself, I thought it was excellent. Its definitely a wide step apart from Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead in terms of style, which I think speaks a lot about Edgar and I will definitely see anything this guy directs from now on. This movie is like a nerd's pop culture wetdream. Seriously, all the little subtle pop culture references from Scott Pilgrim's t-shirts, the 8bit sound effects in the music or the fighting FX taken from fighting games just took the scenes to a higher level.

I told my friend as we were walking out that the movie was like a video game, music video, and comic book all rolled into a single movie - it was awesome.
