Here's a rather humbling clip showing the true scale of the universe

Yes, sadly our encountering other sapient or even sentient life is unlikely in the extreme, but if we were to even just find microorganisms on some other celestial body it would be, IMO, a transcendent discovery.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

There are more galaxies in the universe than there are grains of sand on the Earth.

We can't even begin to get our minds bent on thinking what we are in.

VY Canis majoris is not itself visible in the visible spectrum because the star is surrounded by a nebula of dust and gas ejected as it evolved off of the main sequence. Here is a visible image of the nebula.

And here's a site with some more information and images.

                  That's pretty insane

The pure size of this thing alone is mindboggling

I wanted to be an astronaut as a kid until the challenger blew up, but I never lost the love for viewing outer space. Its truly a wonder all by itself.

I saw a piece on Newser yesterday where Stephen Hawking said even if there is life we don't want it to find us.
